Well i think maybe this could be the end of this blog, i think that i'll close this blog cause i can't update it anymore, and i can see that it's not really popular so it's quite a wist of my time and your time mina.

A Gentle Breeze in the Village (Tennen kokekkô 2007)

This film takes you back to the basics of life. It re-teaches one the values of friendship, through the simplicities of serene country living.

Comments :
Another movie depicting the goodness of simple life in the countryside and the innocent love of a teenage girl. They should not have been able to make such a beautiful film without big name actors and a lot of money, but they did. A miraculously good film, just like "Josee, the Tiger and the Fish".

I have seen the lead actress Kaho in minor roles in many dorama series before, and I didn't have much expectations for her in this movie, but she was phenomenal. She was very cute and pure, had a great control of her emotions, and just fit perfectly into the role. Cinematography and camera-work were equally wonderful, a proof that big budget CG isn't necessary for stunning scenes. What I loved most though, was how well this film was directed. It had a very straightforward story of a shy and earnest girl falling in love, and it didn't have any scenes that were overwhelming memorable and dramatic like most masterpieces, but I was totally drawn into the story. I totally connected with all the main characters. Even the theme song by Qururi is amazingly titled "Kotaba wa Sankaku Kokoro wa Shikaku" (Words are triangular, heart is square). Perfectly describing the youthful heroine not being able to express her true feelings.

Although I still feel "Soredemo Boku wa Yattenai" as the best film of the year, this movie was a very enjoyable experience for me. It shows that beauty lies beneath ordinary things and emotion through subtlety, a true Japanese film. Everything was perfect, I can't come up with a single flaw in this movie. As I mentioned before, a miraculous film.

Little DJ: Chiisana koi no monogatari (2007)

This film very much resembles "Sekai no Chuushin...". In fact, they basically copied "SekaChuu" with boy and girl flipped, 5 years younger, and added DJing.
Extremely enjoyable film just observing the acting skill of every actor who appeared on screen.
The story is very inspirational and touching, and unlike "SekaChuu", it had a really nice flow and used the 2-hour screen time very efficiently without getting draggy. Music was also very calming and moving at times, and overall extremely well produced and well directed as a movie. I especially loved the color saturation of this film, the 70s feel without seeming fakey or even showing a slight hint of corniness.

However, this film was far superior in my opinion. Fukuda Mayuko is my favorite child actress, and Nishida Naomi is an actress I really respect. I was already satisfied with just these two, but Kamiki Ryuunosuke who played the Little DJ was surprisingly suitable for the role and had performed exceptionally well, especially for a child actor. Casting in this film was exceptionally well done, from father, doctor, to modern-day Tamaki with Hirosue Ryouko, were all perfect. I have never seen Nishida Naomi in a mother role before, but her acting was incredibly convincing, and have become even more beautiful in these years. A scene with her and Fukuda Mayuko (Tamaki) was the highlight of this movie. Extremely enjoyable film just observing the acting skill of every actor who appeared on screen.

The only flaw, after the second viewing, was that there were some plot devices and characters severely underused (and thus didn't have to exist at all). It's a tear-jerker like many other movies of its kind, but its message of hope in the ending and its use of songs were by far the best. A Junai-lover must-see.

Kimihiko Onizuka (Sadao Abe) is a salaryman infatuated with Maiko (apprentice geisha) and whose greatest goal in life is to play a party game called "yakyuken" with one. However, when the realization of Kimihiko's lifelong dream is rudely interrupted by a professional baseball star named Kiichiro Naito (Shinichi Tsutsumi), he vows revenge by becoming a pro baseball player himself. Meanwhile, Fujiko decides to become an apprentice geisha. A success war between Kimihiko and Naito ensues where they try to out-do each other by subsequently becoming professional baseball players, K-1 fighters, chefs, actors and even politicians.

I'm a huge fan of Japanese comedies. I'm also a huge fan of Kou Shibasaki. Needless to say, I was really excited to see Maiko Haaaan at my earliest convenience. Some extremely positive reviews added fuel to my fire, but that anticipation began to wane within the first 10 minutes of watching this film.

To be frank, the biggest problem is the main actor – Sadao Abe. This guy proves to be extremely annoying with his persistent, hysterical screaming. When I looked up his filmography I got flashbacks of other irritating performances. Remember Ryuji the Unicorn from the excellent "Kamikaze Girls" (2004)? Well, he was easily the most annoying actor in that one. Remember that psycho kid from the great "Uzumaki" (2000)? Well, he was easily the most annoying actor in that film as well. Seriously, they should have found someone else for Maiko Haaaan and ramped down the unnecessary shrieking, because he single-handedly destroys the enjoyability of this film. Kou Shibasaki is great as always, but she's got nothing to work with here.

Another big negative is the script, which is shamelessly weak. The greatest strength of Japanese comedies is the scriptwriting. Trust me, no country outside of Japan could come up with "Survive Style 5" (2004). Maiko Haaaan is reminiscent of Wong Jing's Hong Kong comedies that use cheap hysterical behavior for comedy. Just pump your lead actor full of caffeine and have him scream and jump around. It simply doesn't work that well. Now, there are a few funny moments to be had (like the ramen noodle sponsored baseball game), but for the most part it ranges between cringeworthy and mediocre.

Listen, there are a bunch of much better Japanese comedies out there to see before this one: "Swing Girls" (2004), "Kamikaze Girls" (2004), "Survive Style 5" (2004), "Happiness of the Katakuris" (2001), "What Did the Lady Forget?" (1937), "Sukeban Boy" (2006), "Ohayo" (1959), the "Trick" television series, "Cutie Honey" (2004), "Bubble Fiction" (2007), "Warm Water Under the Red Bridge" (2001), "Karaoke Terror" (2003), "Crazy Lips" (2000), and "Adrenaline Drive" (1999) to name but a few.

A painfully shy novelist starts coming to the post office regularly and Jung-hye’s face, normally devoid of any expression, little by little takes on a brighter air. Her hidden wounds from her past are also revealed. The film follows Jung-hye’s quiet life and reveals the landscape of the character’s inner feelings.

"Goyokin" is passionate, poetic, beautiful, colorful, thrilling, and brilliantly-filmed. It would be an understatement to say that "Goyokin" is one of the best-looking films I've seen in a long time. Hideo Gosha is one of the most under-appreciated Japanese directors and I say this purely on the strength of this one film because it is a true masterpiece.

"Goyokin" has a sense of theatricality about it that fits better than even many of Kurosawa's films. "Rashomon" for instance features performances completely unsuitable for the film's general mood (in my opinion), but in "Goyokin" the nature of the film fits perfectly with the mood and atmosphere Gosha creates. It's almost operatic in many ways, most noticeably so in the exquisitely-filmed sword fighting scenes. The story itself is also fitting of an Opera or an ancient Greek or Roman tragedy. In the tradition of many chambara films the film is reminiscent in sensibility to a revisionist Western, which can either come off as interesting or forced and in this case reminded me of some of the great American and Italian Westerns that came after the genre's popularity started dying.

Gosha's work here is spectacular. The selection of shots and his coordination with the camera operator are brilliant. The cinematography by Kozo Okazaki displays a fine and mature understanding of the mechanics of photography for film and captures the landscape of the film brilliantly. All the acting is good but Tatsuya Nakadai is truly memorable in the lead role.

I find it exceptionally hard to write extensively about movies I truly love because I find it hard to articulate my thoughts. I'm not sure I have much to say about this film since it struck me on such an emotional level and because it only matters that it is a passionate, poetic, and stunningly well-filmed movie that stands as my favorite movie in the genre quite easily and has immediately become one of my all-time favorites.

n Korea, 1970s was the dark ages of military autocratic regime as well as an era of revolutionary upheaval of pop culture lead by energetic youth. After performing in shabby clubs in a town hosting a U.S. military base, Sang-kyu, a singer, and Man-sik, a guitarist, form Devils, a rock group of six members They participate in a vocal band contest in Seoul. They make a strong impression with a shocking yet amusing performance. Devils achieve stardom playing at a Go-Go dance club called Nirvana. Mimi, who had followed them to Seoul, also becomes a fashion icon with her dance moves and stylish clothes. However, their heydays dont last long. One of their members dies from a fire at the club, and due to oppressive rule of military dictatorship, the clubs close down and they cant perform anymore. In despair, Sang-kyu plans a passionate concert again called Devils Recital.

Sang-eun is a pretty 20 year old girl, that is warm hearted and possess an extraordinary gift for folding paper into various figures. She has a loving mom and friends, but she is also mentally retarded. She has the intelligence of a 7 years old. One day Sang-Eun meets a traffic officer, that she believes may be the prince of her dreams. The traffic officer is named Jong Bum and he has a strong penchant for beautiful woman. He mistakenly believes Sang-Eun to be a lawyer and approachers her. Once Jong Bum realizes that she is mentally challenged he leaves.

Wet Dreams 2 (2004)

Synopsis
This film revolves around the sexual fantasies of Sung-eun and her gal pals Bang Sue-yeon and Kim Mi-sook in Korea circa 1991. But fantasy soon becomes a reality with the arrival of a handsome student teacher named Kang Bong-gu. With his chiseled good looks and sparkling smile, no girl could resist him, that is – if he didn’t have one fatal flaw. It seems that Kang suffers from an unknown illness that makes him fart whenever he feels aroused! However, this problem does not stop Sung-eun from trying to snag her man!

Whereas the first Wet Dreams film focused on the misadventures of four junior high school boys, Wet Dreams 2 focuses on the sexual curiosities of three girls: Soo-yeon, Mi-sook, and Sung-eun. Soon-eun is the most mature and prettiest of the three girls and a number of her all female classmates have schoolgirl crushes on her. She also has a secret admirer called Brainy Smurf who sends her gifts and flowers. Mi-sook is a geeky girl who seems to lack the brainpower to raise her status from geek to nerd. She tends to ask such important questions as "what is a rubber?" and "what is an erection?" She quite often gets the back of her head slapped and generally has abuse heaped upon her by her friends and teachers. Sung-eun is a pretty waif of a girl whose strong interest in boys spurs on the group's little adventures.

As in the previous film, a hormonally charged classroom is given a jolt with the arrival of a young teacher trainee. This time, however, the young teacher, Kang Bong-gu has a bit of interest in his students as well, especially the slender, busty Baek Se-mi. Se-mi is also interested in Bong-gu and being a girl who is used to getting what she wants little can stop her from pursuing her interests. Sung-eun, of course, also develops a crush for the young teacher, but she is a bit intimidated because of her undeveloped body. However, she pursues Bong-gu doing such things as padding her bra, pursuing a flasher to see what a penis looks like, and even going to Bong-gu's apartment and demanding that he have sex with her.

Like the previous film, Wet Dreams 2 is filled with lowbrow humor. Kang Bong-gu farts every time he becomes sexually aroused, which is quite often, and while it might make the viewer giggle once or twice, it becomes old quite quickly, however, it does produce one of the most humorous lines in the movie. After Sung-eun learns that Kang Bong-gu farts when he is sexually aroused, she states "If she, Se-mi, makes him fart then I am going to make him sh*t." Wet Dreams also has a bit of a "creepy" factor as well. Although the girls are all over eighteen in real life, I was a bit uncomfortable with some scenes involving Se-mi and the physical education teacher who took a number of liberties with the girl such as slapping her on the butt a few times. These scenes reeked of sexual harassment although Se-mi didn't seem to mind.

While better than the first film, and with a noticeably higher budget, Wet Dreams 2 falls into the same category of film as American Pie and the like. Therefore, while it can be entertaining, it offers little more than a quick laugh.

Samurai Fiction (1998)

Three centuries ago, a precious sword has been stolen by Kazamatsuri -- the sword, which historic and symbolic value is priceless for the clan (Shogun Tokugawa donated it to clan 80 years before that, at the same time that he established them as the local rulers). Lord's counselor's young son Heishiro goes to retrieve the sword himself to protect the clan from the shame or possible demise. He is accompanied with two friends, Shintaro and Tadasuke, and followed by the ninjas of the clan. After Kazamatsuri wounds Heishiro and kills one of his friends, the young aristocrat still wants revenge more than sword itself, but meanwhile have to recover from his wounds, in the small forest house of a lonely samurai and his daughter. At the same time, Kamazatsuri stays in nearby town in the entertainment center run by Okatsu and falls into her. The older samurai tries to dissuade Heishiro from fighting with Kamazatsuri, but is himself gradually drawn into the conflict.

Comments :

The Japanese b/w movie "Samurai Fiction" is neither a typical martial arts movie nor a classical "old school" samurai drama like the ones of Akira Kurosawa. It's rather a collage of different impressions about the life of a Japanese samurai some hundred years ago who becomes involved in a bloody revenge story.

In the beginning the spectators have to get used to the strange mixture of b/w action scenes, narrations, dances, wild editing and a rock and dance music sound track. After a certain time, director Hiroyuki Nakano seems to remember what a story is and tells an interesting plot about a proud samurai struggling between revenge, fight, death and love.

During movie there are always comedy situations such as the witty dialogue between the samurai and his servant or a really beautiful striptease dance Japanese-style by stunning actress Mari Natsuki to an Asian canton pop version of Peggy Lee's hit "Sway".

If you're into Asian hardcore action movies you may be bored by this unusual movie, but if you're open-minded enough for experiments, "Samurai Fiction" is a good and entertaining example for modern Japanese underground cinema.

Fatt (Richie Jen) is a businessman, who originally comes from a family of martial arts experts. He intends to introduce his girlfriend (Kate Tsui) to his father (Yuen Wah) but is worrying if his father could accept his modern girlfriend. Then, to test out his father, Fatt hires a girl named Zao (Fan Bing Bing), who has just graduated from university and urgently needs money to be his temporary lover. Zao accepts the job and signs a contract to be Fatt's temporary lover. Fatt brings his fake lover home to meet his father, only to expect the unexpected.

Comments :
Kate stars opposite Richie Ren (or Jen, depending on what rocks your boat), as couple Rachel and Fat. They're the atypical modern day couple living it up in Beijing, though the latter is suspect of the former's promiscuity. He loathes the time when he has to bring his girlfriend back to the village to meet his parents, and to get the stamp of approval from his father (played by Yuen Wah). So they device a plan, and that is to look for a substitute girlfriend (hence the title Contract Lover), whose mission is to be as disgusting as possible, so that Dad will tell Fat to find anyone else better than the current beau, and hence, for Fat to introduce Rachel.

Cue Fan Bingbing's Joe (don't ask), a poor Chinese teacher who desperately needs the money to send home to her mom. To pull off being the most horrendous girlfriend ever, she has to go through a complete makeover, and be someone she's totally not, which is basically to act like a slutty bimbo (the credits actually showed her having an image consultant on set, though I suspect the role is to ensure her character doesn't tarnish Fan's good image). Then it's off to the village to try and be a put off to Fat's family.

The plot seems familiar, one of those fluffy romantic comedies where a mismatched couple soon find themselves falling for one another, while at the same time things happen to go against their plan, and for Fat not knowing who actually proves to be more compatible for him. Needless to say, Kate's role here is actually quite limited, given that she only appears in the beginning and at the end. The movie's in Mandarin too, and everyone has to speak it sans dubbers, which means the Hong Kongers must have had quite a difficult time - Kate does struggle with it, and can't seem to shake off her Cantonese accent convincingly.

The narrative runs quite choppily, and scenes seem quite disparate. Besides trying to be sexy at times (more for laughs actually), it cannot shake off the common generalization of villagers, that they just have to be skilled in martial arts. Yuen Wah's Dad is the distant descendant of Huo Yuanjia (remember Fearless?) and spouts (hokey) philosophy quite freely. Having set up the Jing Wu school, and the rivals being distant descendants of Wong Fei Hung, you can be sure that whatever jokes you can think of regarding their ancestry, be brought out for laughs. Those familiar with Hong Kong comedies, might see glimpses of them here, though with a lesser degree of success in delivery....

Kurosaki (Ren Osugi, "Brother", "The Twilight Samurai") is a failed author who has turned to writing cheap S&M porn as a way to make a buck. Lacking expertise, and seeking inspiration for his writing, he has his assistant Kawada (Jun Murakami) hire young models to stage various sexual scenarios. Naturally, Kurosaki's wife (Yoko Hoshi) isn't happy discovering nubile young women tied up in the living room. Feeling neglected, she responds by first flirting with her athletic English teacher. Later, in a last ditch attempt to provoke some degree of interest in her husband, she turns to Kawada. When Kurosaki, a man more prone to ideas than carnal reality, learns what is going on, he desperately tries to turn the illicit affair into literary fodder.

Comments :
When I read a synopsis of this film, I was led to believe it was a comedy, a farce at that. This movie is not. The only thing going for this movie was its brevity. I had no interest in paying attention for the last half of the movie as the characters were unsympathetic and the plot was lacking. I'll admit, I was lured in by the subject matter, but, in the end, I was let down to an extent that I am glad I got it from Netflix so I could send it back as soon as possible. I had hoped to laugh, but instead I checked my email. If you want to watch a comedy, THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO GO. Oh, and also, apparently I need to keep writing to finish out the review, so I'll just reiterate. IT WAS BORING.

17-year-old Yu (Miyazaki Aoi) has a major crush on Yosuke (Eita), the handsome young boy who plays his guitar on the riverbank everyday. He plays the same tune again and again and it fills Yu’s heart with joy and longing - but also with sadness. As much as she may love Yosuke, she knows that his affections lie elsewhere, with Yu’s older sister, no less. Seventeen years later, Yu (now played by Nagasaku Hiromi) and Yosuke (now played by Nishijima Hideotoshi) meet by chance in Tokyo, reawakening long-dormant emotions within Yu’s heart, but also within Yosuke’s.

The film opens to a black screen, and suddenly a person's voice is overheard, they say, "Hey Yosuke… Do you remember? I remember…" and thus begins the beautiful film that is Su-Ki-Da (Japanese for "I Love You"). When I heard about this film a couple of months ago, and was fortunate to be able to view the trailer, I was instantly enthralled by the beautiful visuals that were presented in the trailer. I was finally able to obtain a copy of the movie (which has been recently released on DVD), and I can tell you this, I wasn't prepared for what the film had in store, visually as well as emotionally.

The film follows the lives of Yu and Yosuke, and the story spans from their teenage years all the way to their adulthood. Yu has a major crush on Yosuke, but she doesn't know how to express her feelings to him, but there is also a slight problem; Yosuke likes Yu's older sister…and you can probably tell by now there are going to be some problems that arise from this. We flash forward 17 years later, in which Yu and Yosuke run into each other by accident, and old feelings and regrets begin to come forth.What I loved about this film was that each actor played their parts so convincingly; you become absorbed into their world and truly care about the relationship of the two main characters and what the outcome of it will be. From the awkward moments of the characters trying to convey their feelings through words….but just can't, to the emotional reunion when they are adults, it's all presented so realistically that it hurts. Even though there is little dialogue throughout the film, the characters body language says more than any words could ever express.

As for the acting, it was superb to say the least; Actors Aoi Miyazaki (who plays Yu) and Eita (Who plays Yosuke) are fantastic in their roles of the young Yu and Yosuke. When the film shifts to their adult lives, Hiromi Nagasaku (who plays adult Yu) and Hidetoshi Nishijima (who plays adult Yosuke) takeover and were able to deliver the similar appearance of their youthful counterparts as well as their mannerisms. The cast did a great job, and the traversing between young adult to adulthood was handle very well. This film also had a lot of close-up shots of the characters, which made the film seem even more intimate.

One thing I just have to comment about though is the beautiful cinematography. Director Hiroshi Ishikawa is able give each shot an amazing amount of depth and emotion, and it certainly lends the film a poetic touch. Most of the film was done with an earthly color tone, giving the characters and backdrops a dull look, and it totally enhances the film's overall presences. The pacing of the film seemed a little slow at first, but definitely picks up, as well as builds up towards its conclusion.

For my final statement regarding Su-Ki-Da, is that it was a pleasure for me to watch, and I was spellbound every minute of it. It's the kind of film that will definitely stick with you long after you've seen it, mainly because of its heartfelt story. From the excellent visuals all the way to its great cast, Su-Ki-Da is a film that will definitely be in my collection. A notable classic in my books, I greatly recommend it.

Easily one of the best movies I have ever seen.

I am disappointed and yet not surprised at the low score given to this movie. It's not a typical action flick, as the trailer may lead many to believe. It is about so many things and the weak point is that it takes up so much, it is slightly difficult to follow.

I can't even express all the themes and things that flow through this movie. It takes up questions such as: Why do we fight wars? What is ethical? What would you do for love? What does it mean to be a father, a son, lovers, a citizen of a nation, a national leader, human, alive? Visually the movie is just breathtaking. It's gorgeous. Kiriya is not afraid to do what he feels does justice to the scene. He was the one behind the camera, not a common place for the director, to get the shot exactly the way he wanted it. Quite scenes are thoughtful and even the fight scenes are purely intense. Fantastic.

The movie is based on a 70s anime which is quite different. But it is interesting to note the places where the movie pays homage to the original anime.

The English subtitles are quite good and quite accurate. There are a few parts that I would have translated it differently, but over all, the integrity of the film is totally intact.

I highly recommend this film for true lovers of sci-fi who are looking something that is more than mindless battle scenes.

From writer/director Jang Hyeon-Su (Born to Kill) comes Everybody Has Secrets, a comic tale of sex and secrecy that argues that not all secrets need to be revealed, especially if they can fuel a loving relationship. This remake of a little-known Irish film called About Adam features popular Korean idol Lee Byung-Hun (JSA) as a modern day Don Juan who ends up bedding a trio of sisters, while at the same time irrevocably changing their lives which begs the question, is it a change for the better?

Comments :
The story is about a man who meets the youngest of three sisters and then ends up influencing all of their lives in the most charismatic way. He tries his best to uplift their spirits by giving them closure and a friend. This is by no means a lewd flick and has a lot of class in the field of direction and acting. The ending fits the movie but not many people may like it.

This is a definitely worth a watch but don't expect it to be anything to the tune of "My sassy girl" which in my opinion is the best romantic movie to come out of Korea in recent times. This one however has very good acting from LEE and CHOI with good support from rest of the cast. The flavour of the movie is of the typical Korean romance flick but needs to have a much more solid script which goes helter-skelter from time to time.

Don't let the title fool you. It's cheesy and mushy, but the movie surprised me. I didn't expect it to be so good. It grabs you and doesn't let you go. The plot is kinda simple - 18-year-old heir Kang Jaekyung (played by Bin Hyeon) is a spoiled brat who is used to getting everything he wants. Alas, he will be entitled to his grandfather's millions only if he will graduate at particular school in particular place. At first he is being rebellious and all, but then he realizes that he's seeing this girl Choi Eunwhan (played by Yeonhee Lee) more often. Of course, the title suggests that he will fall in love. But it's trickier than it seems, because Eunwhan has a heart-disease and then the changes begin.

Everything is shown with such kindness and disengagement that it has ALMOST made me cry. I mean - ME, and I never cry during movies. What else. Well, nice job of director of photography and editor. Really nice. Also the OST is like wow. Do I have to tell you that I have the theme song on my play-list? :) And it is sung by Kim Jaejoong!! A movie is based on some of those hentai manga games we could find over the internet. The same with the different characters you could choose and of course the target is the sexy teacher.

The main plot is about a catholic school in South Korea, where a young female teacher comes for probation. She has to work as a teacher in french class, where the children are mostly male students. Anyway her character is played by Seon-yeong Ahn - sexy and very good looking Asiatic hottie. All the male students mostly at age of 17 are stunned by her and not only students, but the other male teachers themselves too. The catholic school conducts every year a fete with main auditory -mostly archbishop and his staff. The french teacher decides to make a different type of festival - a musical. A three volunteers are on line to be trained by her to dance : a handsome guy whose success with girls is legendary, a romantic guy with extraordinary penis and old face(maybe because of some kind of sickness - but the actor is 40 yo man) and a pervert , which interests are mostly with sex shop articles. All these three guys tries to win the heart of the young teacher. The other competitor for this competition is the teacher in maths- a sadistic and idiotic character. The movie is watchable. There is many hilarious moments and sexy jokes. Most of the jokes are silly and retarded, but I suppose that is the charm of the movie. After 2 or 3 hours you will forget about it.

Ji-hae and Soo-kyoung are friends attending the same university and both have a crush on Sang-min who is in their drama club. The more clamorous and outgoing of the two, Soo-kyoung, asks Ji-hae to do her a favor - write a love letter to Sang-min. Ji-hae pours out her own feelings for him on paper, but sadly in her friend’s name. Touched by the letter, Sang-min is attracted to Soo-kyoung, and Ji-hae, feeling uncomfortable and even guilty, tries to avoid him. And yet by coincidence or by fate she keeps running into him.

Ji-hae has lived alone with her mom since her childhood, when her dad unexpectedly passed away. Her mom is now on a trip abroad, and to wile away her solitude she starts cleaning the attic. There Ji-hae finds a secret box, in which her mom kept the memorabilia of her first love story of some decades past.

Summer in 1968…
Joon-ha is visiting his uncle’s home in the countryside during his summer vacation. There he meets Joo-hee and falls in love at first sight. One day, the lovely Joo-hee secretly asks Joon-ha to escort her to a haunted house in the village. Happy and excited to be at her service, Joon-ha meets her at their promised spot. But in an unexpected storm, the two lose their boat and barely manage to return home at a very late hour. Joo-hee gets into big trouble for this incident and is sent back to Seoul. Having parted with Joo-hee without a word of farewell, Joon-ha spends the rest of the summer heavy-hearted.

With summer vacation being over Joon-ha also returns to Seoul. At school, his classmate Tae-su asks him to write a love letter to send to a girl. And who would it be but Joo-hee, Joon-ha’s dream girl. Unable to confess his own summer love story, Joon-ha reluctantly complies with his friend’s request.

Invisible Target ( Naam yi boon sik 2007)

An armoured truck carrying $100 million of cash is attacked by a criminal gang which calls themselves the "Ronin Gang" with explosives as it stops at a traffic junction in front of a jewellery shop. All the security guards were shot dead except one, while responding police officers suffered serious casaulties under the gunfire of the heavily armed gang members. The explosions also killed several civilians, including a lady in the shop. Six months later, the same gang reappears in Hong Kong, injuring a group of policemen, two critically, during a spot check. The dead woman in the jewellery shop was Crime Investigation Department detective Chan Chun's fiancee, while the injured policemen are led by Trainee Inspector Fong Yik-wei. Both officers vow revenge on the criminal gang.

Wai King-ho is a rookie cop whose older brother, Wai King-tat, also a police officer, has been missing for an extended period. Deeply upset by police allegations that his brother has become a part of the criminal gang while infiltrating as an undercover, he was suspended from duty due to this connections with his now-wanted brother, and later confronted by both Chan and Fong who demand his brother's whereabouts. They form an alliance after Wai is rescued by Chan and Fong in a fight at a night club. Little Tiger is captured by Chan and is forced to lead the police to the gang's hideout. The gang appears however and kills Tiger after a chase, while injuring Chan and several of his colleagues.

It turns out that the surviving security guard is Ho Wing-keung, the manager of the security company and who is in colludes with the gang to rob the armoured truck. He is tracked down by the gang to a psychiatric hospital, where he feigns a mental breakdown to escape detection by the gang. Chan, Fong and Wai arrive at the hospital, but fail to prevent his escape with the gang, who threaten his family to force him out. As the three pursue the gang, they run into an accident scene, where the gang shoots several police officers at the scene, hijacks a mini-bus with young children, and takes Wai as a hostage in the bus. Chan and Fong goes after the bus with Ho in another car.

The gang members and the police officers engage in a lengthy confrontation, in which Wai discovers that his brother has his background exposed and killed by gang member Ronin Tien Yeng-yee. Ho is killed by Tien Yeng-seng to silence him, Wai is left handcuffed to the bus with the children and a timer bomb, while Chan and Fong are forced to collect the stolen cash from the robbery's mastermind at a funfair at Tamar while chained to another timer bomb. Wai manages to free himself and rescue all the children, and discovers that the bomb is fake, suggesting that Ronin has no intention to harm the children. Chan and Fong approaches a man with a luggage at the funfair as instructed, but the man turns out to be Chief Inspector Sam, who is leading an operation to nap the gang. The operation goes awry, the timer bomb is ignited safely in the nick of time, and Sam was pulled away by Chan and Fong to a secluded area, where they attempt to explain their situation to him. It is then revealed that Sam is also colluding with the mastermind, and is promptly killed, resulting in Chan and Fong becoming suspects for the murder.

With the help of Fong's girlfriend Leung Hoi-lam from the Police Intelligence Department, Chan and Fong realise that the real mastermind is Senior Superintendent Cheung Man-yiu, who has orchestrated the armour truck robbery, double-crossed the gang resulting in the death of three of their members, and made off with the loot which he keeps hidden in a car in the Police Headquarters carpark. The remaining four members of the criminal gang arrive at the Headquarters in a police van masquerading as police officers to forcefully get the money back, just before the arrival of Chan, Fong and Wai. Senior Superintendent Mark Law Pui-keung begins to learn about the truth from data provided by Leung.

An extended showdown at the Police Headquarters ensues, resulting in the deaths of three criminals, multiple policemen including a Special Duties Unit squad and Wai, who was beaten to death by Tien. An injured Tien was shot by Cheung, who nearly escapes arrest when he was later led to an ambulance by unsuspecting officers. He was subsequently shot dead by Chan and Fong when he tries to kill Law who was led to another ambulance. Both Chan and Fong return to their police duties, but as a detective and a beat cop respectively. They also help take care of Wai's grandmother.

Comments :
There's nothing invisible about the target in Benny Chan's latest movie Invisible Target. And in actuality, it seems that the constant target for everyone in the movie here, be they the bad guys or the good cops, are the plenty of glass lying around, getting smashed into smithereens by hurled projectiles, or more frequently, human bodies. See that nice looking glass window? It'll be smashed soon. Or that double panel glass facade? Yup, as soon as you notice it, the next scene will show it in a million bits on the floor with a writhing body. It could be aptly titled Glass Target.

But don't get me wrong. Invisible Target is still enjoyable, in that it brings to you the flavour of a typical Hong Kong action movie, with Benny Chan at the helm. As we slowly get nauseated by the frequent mole versus mole plots that Hong Kong crime thrillers formula usually adopted (no thanks to the success of you know what), I thought Invisible Target was reminiscent about an old John Woo movie Hard Boiled, except that it's minus the guns, and instead you get plenty of fisticuffs. A similarly long drawn out ending was a little too tedious to sit through, though it had its fair share of big bangs and segmented action sequences which tried hard to hold your attention. Teahouses remain perfect locales for fights to break out (as in Hard Boiled), and here, it serves as a male bonding moment for our three heroic cops Chan Chun (Nicholas Tse), Fong Yik-wei (Shawn Yue) and Jaycee Chan's Wai King-ho......

With the comedy genre offering so little in the way of entertainment lately, it is refreshing to see a film that re-afirms that comedy can be funny without insulting one's intelligence. TALK, TALK, TALK is such a film, offering strong performances, good characterisations, and witty dialogue, making for good-hearted viewing that doesn't overly manipulate or simplify.

Director Hideyuki Hirayama, who has helmed a variety of films from the enjoyable remake SAMURAI Resurrection, the excellent TURN, to the flat and disappointing LADY JOKER, puts character and dialogue front and centre, something a lot of modern film-makers fail to do nowadays.

Taichi Kokubun is fine as the rakugoka-in-training, Karina is wonderful as the sour-faced Satsuki, Yataka Matsushige is perfectly awkward as ex-baseball pinch hitter Yugawara, and Yuuki Morinaga is terrificly natural as the young Murabayashi.

With a story that could have been routine and predictable, TALK, TALK, TALK proves to be anything but, showing that you can have a good time without sacrificing quality.

A struggling artist Hee-do is offered a million dollar to bet his life if he loses a game against a rich old man named No-shik who is dying from a terminal disease. The game is to dial any random number and tell whether it would be male or female who takes the call before the phone gets answered. Hee-do calls “Female” and No-shik “Male.” It turns out the call-answerer is a drag queen and Hee-do loses. After a month of a brain operation, No-shik wakes up in Hee-do’s body and Hee-do does in No-shik’s. With Hee-do’s young healthy body, No-shik is now the man of health and wealth, let alone romance with the clueless Hee-do’s fiancé. Meanwhile, No-shik’s ex-wife convinces the frustrated Hee-do to help her lay out a scheme to revenge upon No-shik by revealing the truth. However, the woman is found dead not long after in No-shik’s office building. Hee-do comes to another showdown with No-shik and makes the second bet that could return his lost body if he wins and could lose his memories about his fiancé to No-shik if he fails. Each calls out random numbers and waits for the voice to be heard.

"If you're innocent, surely there's no way they can find you guilty?"

Teppei KANEKO is a young guy, typical of many of his generation; he works part-time, hangs out in Tokyo and tries to figure out what life has in store for him.

He finds out the hard way. Finally getting his act together, he's on his way to his first job interview when he's accused of groping a young schoolgirl on the train.

He desperately pleads his innocence but the police are only interested in coercing a quick confession and closing the books. Before he knows what's going on his denials plunge him into a Kafka-esque world of bureaucratie precedent.

Being held in custody is a frustrating, brutalizing and lonely experience for Teppei. The prosecutor ignores his explanations of innocence and he's summarily arraigned for trail. In Japan judges are promoted for the speed with which they deal with their caseloads with a resulting 99.9% guilty rate. Belying its adoption of most aspects of modern democracy, Japan does not have trail by jury and presumption of guilt is reality in all but name.

Driven by the purity of his belief that innocence will save him, Teppei secures the services of veteran defense counsel, Mr. Arakawa (Koji YAKUSHO) and greenhorn assistant defense attorney, Ms. Sudo (Aska SETO). Sudo does'nt have the slightest desire to defend a groper but when Arakawa tells her that false accusations of molestation go to the very heart of the problems with Japan's legal system, she begrudgingly complies.

Meanwhile Teppei's mother (Masako MOTAI) and slacker best friend, Tatsu (Koji YAMAMOTO), form an unlikely alliance to organize on his behalf.

As his circle of friends and supporters gathers round, so too the noose of "justice" tightens and the power of the state moves against one young man who is about to have to grow up very fast.

I applaud the film director, Masayuki Suo, for having the courage to put out such a poignant film that speaks volumes about Japan's flawed justice system as a Japanese citizen. The 99.9% guilty rate is a reality not taken seriously by foreigners and many of those living in Japan. As a foreigner, it was interesting to see how laws are applied within the context of such a seemingly modernized and developed country. We follow the main character, Teppei, who is caught at the wrong place at the wrong time as he is accused of committing a crime he did not commit. With the assumption that standing by his innocence will set him free quickly and painlessly, we soon learn about the psychological battle he and those close to him have to battle.

Japan's judicial system is very different from westernized systems. In Canada for instance, much of our outcries and screams of injustice belies on the fact that the justice system "protects" criminals. More guilty people walk away or serve light sentences for crimes committed here. In Japan, it is quite the opposite and it makes one ponder... how many innocent people exactly are locked up? How easy is it for individuals to take advantage on that "trust" and falsely accuse another person of a crime they did not commit for the purpose of a hefty out-of-court settlement? In all, this film was excellent and is an important tool for us to reflect upon how "justice" is applied in different nations. It is exceptionally accurate in its portrayals of the daily ins and outs of those in Japanese jails. To assume that the Japanese system "can't really be THAT bad" is a slap in the face to all those who had to undergo that kind of psychological hardship as INNOCENT men and women. I am saying this as a fact. My boyfriend had spent close to a month in jail with accusations for a crime he did NOT commit. The prosecutor's only goal is to dig up any kind of confession by any means necessary - verbal coercion, bending stories, refusing or providing menial legal counsel, etc. When your ultimate verdict is guilty from the start, what kind of justice does an innocent individual have left? Is it right for an innocent man to say that he is guilty when he is absolutely innocent?

The original My Boss, My Hero hilarity came from the irony of a gangster in his 30s going to high school and attempting to get a diploma without revealing his criminal identity. The gangster, Kye Du-sik, tries to get along with his much younger classmates and ends up solving problems at the school.

In the sequel My Boss, My Hero 2, Kye has graduated and entered college. He is dispatched to a high school to work as a student teacher for four weeks.

The problems in high school are worse than the original. Kyu witnesses one especially corrupt teacher forge the scholastic documents of privileged students whose fathers are high-ranking politicians, and have a sexual relationship with a pupil.

Comments :
I've never seen the original, but I have seen this sequel, which I have to say, was an average, mediocre film. All actors and actresses made a great performance. Story and element was unique. What really did affect my grading of this movie was based on what most Korean movies had. I'm Korean and I've seen numerous amounts of Korean movies, but none did ever have a great ending. They always ended in the weirdest way possible. Some of their endings were just crude and off, which ruins the entire movie itself. This movie still did have a near satisfying ending. But I'd have to say that the progression of the film was just either TOO slow or TOO unnecessary. I'd say that there were some crude, funny jokes added in scenes, but the story itself went by too slowly. I almost dozed off just watching the entire film. The ending just builds up its height due to some surprising, shocking moment. Besides that, the film was notoriously INACTIVE, as how I would have felt.

During Ogami Itto's journey to the final showdown with his arch-enemy Retsudo, leader of the evil Yagyu clan, we witness everything from incest bordering on necrophilia, zombie samurai who can burrow in the ground like worms, the usual assortment of mutilations, a battle on snow skis, and the most elaborate baby cart weaponry yet--including automatic armor plating! As usual, the images are beautifully composed, the action is splendidly choreographed, the plot ideas are wonderfully outrageous, and the funky music score is cool perfection. Any of this out of context would be silly; in context, it's almost sublime.

Even though all the festival-scenes are a sub-plot that adds little to nothing to the story, I find this an excellent film. The idea and the enactment of the five Samurai, each giving Ogami a part of his mission as their dying words, exemplifies the value of loyalty and truth above all. In all the Lone Wolf films honor is considered the highest value, and there is a continuous presence of morality throughout the series. In this film I was touched by the incredible loyalty of all the Samurais of the Kuroda clan. Even when on fire, fatally wounded or bleeding from every orifice, they still continue to serve their clan. In fact they care so much for their clan that they hire Ogami to kill their own, perverted masters, because their actions bring dishonor and great danger to the clan.

Story-wise certainly the most elaborate of the Lone Wolf films, I found this one to be the best.

This one and "Peril" are by far my favorites. In the opening scenes we see Ogami wipe out three ninja and it must be seen to be believed. I particularly liked the character development in this film. Itto meets Magomura Kanbei, a disgraced ronin much like himself. It appears Kanbei has a death wish and the reason is uncertain until the end of the movie. He is a very interesting character. Ogami is tortured by yakuza to save a prostitute who killed a pimp in self defense and this is how he is led to his next commission. Great story, and action that is second to none. His quick draw in one scene is so fast I swore the film was sped up. Well, it wasn't. The man is that good. Another plus, there's Hamada Yuko. She is one good-looking woman. This is a very enjoyable movie that can be viewed many times and it never gets old.

LONE WOLF AND CUB: BABY CART AT THE RIVER STYX is quite an amazing film. Along with the likes of Shunya Ito's FEMALE PRISONER SCORPION films and Kinji Fukasaku's BATTLES WITHOUT HONOR AND HUMANITY series, the LONE WOLF AND CUB series is one of the greatest Japanese cult film sagas. RIVER STYX, however, which later would become the majority of SHOGUN ASSASSIN in 1980, is something of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK to the first segment's (SWORD OF VENGENACE) A NEW HOPE.

The violence in BABY CART AT THE RIVER STYX is incredible, the direction by Kenji Misumi is taut and the cinematography is bravura, resembling, at times, Tonino Della Colli's stunning cinematography in Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. Really, the whole film very much resembles a violent Spaghetti Western with wandering samurai instead of lone gunmen and katanas instead of pistols. The bright red recipe of Japanese stage blood flows in a torrential fashion in this film. Tomisaburo Wakayama's Ogami Ito (or Lone Wolf) is one of the coolest anti-heroes on film, deserving to be mentioned in the same sentence as Clint Eastwood's The Man With No Name. His love for his son Daigoro is touching yet he is a truly a fierce warrior and force to be reckoned with.

BABY CART AT THE RIVER STYX is by far the most entertaining and best made of the LONE WOLF AND CUB films. It (along with about 10 minutes from SWORD OF VENGEANCE) would later form the basis for SHOGUN ASSASSIN, a redubbed, rescored American version of the film with a narration track courtesy of Daigoro. While it actually has quite a few improvements over both films, the purist in me still prefers the original. A triumphant orgy of bloodshed and katana slashing.

This is one of those movies that met my high expectations. It's the first film in the popular "Baby Cart" series, based on an equally popular comic book of the same name. My first brush with the film came in the form of "Shogun Assassin (1980)," a feature-length film that consisted of scenes from some films in the series. I thought that movie was fantastic, so I have always wanted to see the entire series. This movie did not disappoint me. The story is about a Samurai named Ogami Itto (superbly played by Tomisaburo Wakayama) who is betrayed by his own clan (the treacherous Yagyu clan). He soon becomes a Ronin for hire, while still seeking to destroy the Yagyu. The movie has a great gimmick - Ogami fights his enemies while pushing the stroller that carries his infant son. The story is tightly constructed, the cinematography is breathtaking, and the editing is clever and effective. It has some of the most spectacular fight sequences I have ever seen (the climax is incredible!); the film contains many graphic and imaginative sequences. But the movie is not all action; it has one fascinating subplot about a prostitute. In actuality, director Kenji Misumi does a fantastic job in balancing all the film's elements; action, gore, politics, and sentiment get equal attention. It is a truly exciting, fast-paced and intelligent movie. Needles to say, this not for the squeamish. A must-see movie for fans of Samurai films.

After a career-ending injury, tap dancer Sano Shuhei (Moriyama Mirai) finds himself in snowy Hokkaido, looking to marry his girlfriend, figure skating instructor Shizuka (Kato Rosa). Unfortunately his plans are put on thaw by Shizuka’s disapproving father who has no intentions of marrying off his daughter to anyone anytime soon. Father dearest eventually agrees to let the couple tie the knot if Shuhei can coach the local junior hockey team Smilers to victory at the regional championships. Despite knowing nothing about the sport, Shuhei gamely takes on the challenge, which is more than can be said of his players. Without a smiler in the bunch, the Smilers have never even won a single match. Using atypical methods, Shuhei manages to get his scrappy team of discouraged misfits into some semblance of talent and teamwork, but will it be enough to beat the corporate-sponsored reigning champion, not to mention his stubborn father-in-law?.

When you think of children's ice hockey movies, The Mighty Ducks franchise probably comes instantly to mind. Likewise when I first saw the trailer for this movie, I can't help but to recall the Ducks, as well as the usual formula attached to team sports movie in general, where a motivational coach takes responsibility to turn a rag-tag team around and achieve glory. From Remembering the Titans to We Are Marshalls to Gridiron Gang, you just can't put a stop to such constant cookie cutter production under different premises.

So to differentiate itself, and for my personal gauge, so long as the movie moves me at certain points despite clichés, then it works. Smiler does so on many counts, and is in fact a fine children's sports movie that is suitable for all ages, with the usual lessons to learn such as having no short cuts to success, persevering when the going gets tough, always believing in yourself and similar positive learnings to be gained from sitting through all 122 minutes of it. Like Swing Girls and Waterboys in its treatment and development of the narrative where the protagonists have to battle adversary, we follow the games of a junior high ice hockey team called Smilers, whom everyone including themselves, write their chances off even before the first puck gets hit, if at all.

It's mainly told in flashback mode, though the prologue and epilogue spoke volumes that warm the heart. In the main narrative thread there are more than 3 little subplots which involve relationships, and the main bulk of it would be that of tap-dancer Shuhei (Mirai Moriyama) and figure skating teacher Shizuka (Rosa Kato). A career ending injury brings Shuhei to Hokkaido to be with his lady love, but his wedding proposal got thwarted by her dad, who dangles the carrot that he'll only agree to giving her hand away in marriage, should he coach his school team to victory in the championships.

Armed with nothing but his child psychology background, Shuhei has an uphill task in getting his team together, a group of boys whose skills are like unpolished gems, and to motivate them using some pretty innovative conviction that they are the best out there. Co- written by director Takanori Jinnai, he gives us some likable characters to grow attached to, and while each of them might have been boxed by their individual and personal issues, I thought it more than compensated any shortcomings, as we really get to know these kids, rather than being faceless beings brought in to make up numbers....

What would you do if someone knew one of your secrets and tried to exploit the situation for his own gain? That's the situation facing the lead character in The Customer Is Always Right, written and directed by Oh Ki Hyun. The film revolves around the life of a meek barber named Ahn Chang Jin (Seong Ji Roo, from Super Family), a self-educated professional who takes great pride in his job. To keep everything ship shape, he purchases the best equipment, cleans the shop regularly, and even plays classical music to enliven the spirits of his customers. In his personal life, he's got a beautiful wife named Jeon Yeon Ok (Seong Hyeon Ah, from The Intimate). Life seems good, at least, at first.

Things take a dramatic turn one day when the barber comes face-to-face with a scary-looking intimidator by the name of Kim Yang Gil (Myeong Kye Nam). It seems that Ahn hides a dark past, and the mysterious Mr. Kim has no problem blackmailing the barber through this shady little secret. On the first day, Ahn ends up paying Kim off with a small amount of cash, but each time the man returns, his demands for payment become progressively worse, as the "fee" doubles each time he visits. Desperate to maintain his reputation, he complies with the man's wishes, but eventually finds himself in fear of his next move. Eventually, Ahn hires a private investigator to look into the man's background and see if there are any skeletons in his closet. However, this investigation unearths something rather startling about the mystery blackmailer. Adapted from a short story by Japanese mystery writer Nishimura Kyotaro, The Customer Is Always Right proves that some secrets are better left buried in the past!

Following the mainstream theme of Korean movies at the moment, Sonimeun Wangida (The Customer is Always Right), plays on revenge and a slightly less than mediocre love story. Also the movie fails when trying to portray the subtle mood... the same mood for which the Korean cinema has become infamous lately. So what gives - why a just below average 5/10? Well the saying - "The Customer is Always Right" - comes with a twist, and the plot carrying it all the way through does it without a glitch. It is th th th... thoroughly thought through. And Ji-ru Sung playing Ahn Chang-jin does his part more than well. The story only having a few characters makes it very easy to follow and impossible not to understand. It could have used a few more characters to pull of a more complicated twist at the end... all in all a little less than average - 5/10.

When Fuji TV's popular crime drama "Unfair" first debuted on Japanese TV in 2006, it was a much welcomed return to the type of hard boiled "keiji" (detective) drama that used to dominated the airwaves in the 70s. While nowhere near as long lived as such Japanese classics like "Taiyo Ni Hoerou" (Howl At The Sun), "G-Men '75", "Tokusou Saizensen" (Frontline Investigation) and the landmark "Seibu Keisatsu" (Western Police) series, "Unfair" made it's mark by introducing Japanese audiences to a decidedly different type of strong female police detective character.

Based on a mystery novel series by Hata Takehiko, the series followed the exploits of top Police Inspector, Yukihira Natsumi (Shinohara Ryoko) who was a member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police force's elite Homicide division and the daughter of a slain high ranking Police Investigator. While she had a distinguished career as a police officer and detective, her brash and sometimes unconventional approaches to police work often got her in trouble with her conservative superiors. Her troubled past had also caused her much pain and resulted in the breakup of her marriage and estrangement from her 5 year old daughter. Yet her exceptional talents, sharp mind and striking good looks made her a force to be reckoned with.

The drama series lasted for about 11 episodes and was soon followed by a special "Unfair: The Special - Code Breaking - Angoukaitoku" (Unfair: The Special - Code Breaking Crytoanalysis).

The series was very much in the same style and attitude as the sensational FOX series "24", and it was with much anticipation that I looked forward to this big screen movie version. Unfortunately, perhaps my expectations were too great and "Unfair: The Movie" rather disappointed with it's subdued action, unexciting tone and surprisingly manipulative storyline.

The movie takes place after the events of the TV special. Yukihira's life has settled back down to normalcy and she is making some headway in improving her relationship with daughter Miho, albeit there is still some emotional distance. Thing go to hell when a failed assassination attempt is made on Yukihira's life but instead kills Yukihara's babysitter and severely injures Miho. Miho is rushed to nearby Toyosu Hospital where coincidently an influential Police Chief is also being treated in an unrelated matter.

While Yukihira and her boss Saiki Jin (Eguchi Yosuke) investigate the attempt on Yukihira's life, a group of young thugs take siege of Toyosu Hospital, taking control of the facilities. They soon release all of its personnel and patients but hold the Police Police Chief for ransom. Miho is also still in the hospital, having taken refuge during the initial takeover.

As is quickly becoming a tired cliché, inept Police bureaucrats including Assistant Police Director Irie (Osugi Ren) make a number of dumb mistakes trying to take charge of the situation. They send a large contingent of their best Special Response Team members (SAT - Special Attack Team) to infiltrate the hospital only to see them seemingly wiped out by the youth gang in short order. They also refuse to relinquish to the gang's demand of almost 8,000,000,000 yen in Police holdings and assets in exchange for the Police chief's life. In response the gang rather coldly executes the chief on televised video and next threatens to unleash Bubonic Plague cultures stored in the Hospital's disease control center to create a deadly pandemic in the heart of Tokyo.

Yukihira, desperate to get her daughter back, decides to infiltrate the hospital on her own. With frequent partner Mikami Kaoru (Kato Masaya) in tow, the two enter the hospital to save Miho and stop the gang.

They soon discover that things are not all that they seem as they find that the gang is comprised of rogue members of their own Police Force and are being led by a former SAT Commander/Police Academy Instructor, Goutou Kuniyaki (Shiina Kibei). Tired of the corruption and lack of leadership of the Police Department, he has decided to rebel against the establishment and has recruited a number of Police Acedemy recruits as well as Yukihira's former friend and computer expert Hasumi Anna (80s JPop singer/actress Hamada Mari) to join his cause. Can Yukihira and Mikai stop this army and save Tokyo? Who was behind the assassination attack on Yukihira and how does it fit in with Yukihira's past?

The screenplay by TV series scribe Sato Shimako (Eko Eko Azaraku - Wizard of Darkness) borrows elements liberally from Michael Bay's "The Rock" but doesn't give us much to get excited about. The story is rife with tired genre clichés, sappy dialog and an almost too painfully contrived plot.

I was particularly surprised by series director Kobayashi Yoshinori's almost anemic sense of storytelling her which was in stark contrary to the TV series.

Shinohara Ryoko is definitely the big draw here as beautiful detective Yukihira and the producers know and exploit it. There is no shortage of the stunning Shinohara in wet blouse, gun in hand and pouty expression mugging for attention.

The saving grace for the film however is Eguchi Yosuke. While mainly known for his likable TV "J-Dorama" roles, he plays a decidedly different character here who we can't really figure out or pin down. Is he in league with the villains or is he on Yukihira's side. His role is the most interesting aspect of the movie and I wish that had been played up more in the movie similar to what was done in "Infernal Affairs".

Shiina Kibei's Goutou had the potential to be as good of a character as Ed Harris' General Hummel character in "The Rock" but wasn't given much chance to shine as was Hamada Mari's treacherous character.

While I wasn't expecting something as good as other deka movies like "Abunai Deka", "Sukeban Deka" or "Odoru Daisosasen", I certainly wasn't expecting the movie to disappoint so much.

On the first day of class a young teacher enters an unruly room and begins his first lecture. To gain the students' attention he relates the story of what probably led him into a life of mathematics.

Told via flashbacks, the young teacher goes back to a time, probably 20 years earlier, when his mother was hired to look after a professor who suffered brain damage in an auto accident. The brain damage didn't harm the personality of the man but limited his short- term memory to 80 minutes. The accident occurred 10 years earlier, in about 1975, up to that point the professor has a clear memory of events.

The movie is tale of the relationship that follows, a simple and straightforward tale. The story is well paced, the mood upbeat. There's quite a bit of baseball in it, a good plot device through which the young boy becomes a friend of the professor and earns a lifelong interest in mathematics.

A central event in the movie is a no-hitter by Yutaka Enatsu of the Hanshin Tigers on August 8, 1973. He pitched 11 innings and, according to the movie, hit a walk-off home run to win the game. (The no-hitter and length of the game have been verified on Japanese baseball sites.) In the movie, the professor asks the boy what Enatsu's ERA is, the boy replies that "he has retired." In real life, Enatse retired in 1984 which fits with the estimated time span in the movie. That's the kind of attention to detail you'll find in the movie.

A good way to pass a few hours - especially when you are trapped in an airliner for 12 hours. (It's better than that, really.) The story is so entertaining that by the time you learn the beloved equation, you'd already forgotten it was coming.

During peace in 1725, aging swordsman Isaburo is living a henpecked life when his clan lord requests that Isaburo's son marry the lord's mistress, with whom he's displeased, even though she's born him a son. Isaburo wants to refuse, but his son Yogoro accepts the woman, Ichi, and they fall deeply in love. Their love renews Isaburo, so when the clan lord's elder son dies and the lord sends for Ichi to return to his side as mother of his heir, Isaburo opposes his lord. Yogoro and Ichi, who now have a baby daughter, stand with him. The clan orders their suicide, then sends soldiers to kill them. Isaburo's only hope is to take his case to Edo to expose the clan's cruelty.

Samurai Rebellion is one of the best films I've ever seen. Masaki Kobayashi is my favorite Japanese director next to Kurosawa, at times even surpassing the latter. Samurai Rebellion is a well-acted, brilliantly directed film about standing up against injustice that manages to tug firmly on one's heart strings without ever being cloying. Mifune shows the full extent of his acting abilities by not having to play the sort of macho character that he came quite close to being typecast as, and Yôko Tsukasa is no less remarkable. The soundtrack by Toru Takemitsu is also wonderful, serving to add another layer to the film's narrative and emotional impact rather than merely emphasizing it. Another remarkable aspect of the film is the use of violence: Although the fight scenes near the end are brilliantly choreographed and filmed, they're not in the least glamourous, depicting the desperation, sadness and anger of Mifune's character. It's a terrible shame that most people will never see this film, one that most likely deserves to be considered a classic of world cinema, just because it isn't directed by Kurosawa.

Four couples are heartbroken with their pending separation caused by the compulsory military service. The boys are worried their girlfriends will now have an excuse to meet other men. How crazy is it to wait 730 days for a lover?
A recently released Korean DVD, "Crazy Waiting" ("The Longest 24 Months" - Gidarida michyeo) portrays the painful separation period that young Korean couples endure due to the mandatory military service imposed on men here.
For patient people, 730 days might not seem that long, but it can be an eternity for young lovers.
As one of the last divided countries in the world, Korea sends its young, healthy men in their early 20s — typically the prime of their lives — into the military. The length of the service is generally two years but varies slightly depending on the armed branch.
In this film, four couples have to go through tearful goodbyes. It's sad for the guys, but even more heartbreaking for the girls, who must send their loved ones to some countryside training camp where they don't even have a decent heater.
After the initial, emotion-ridden phase, however, the girls' worries about their boyfriends soon dissipate into a tidal wave of loneliness. "Crazy Waiting" ("The Longest 24 Months"), however, doesn't just show the hardship of the guys' gundae; it focuses on the girlfriends' story.
Each relationship has its ups and downs, but the military service is the overriding theme in this story, creating empathy among the four couples who come from various backgrounds.
Each couple copes with the loneliness in a different way, writing their own conclusion.
All of the girls face individual crises when they confront their loneliness. Two start cheating on their boyfriends. One couple breaks up a few months after the boyfriend's departure. In the end, only one couple survives gundae — but they are a bit scarred after their tempestuous on-again, off-again bouts.
The title "Crazy Waiting" expresses well the flood of emotions that overwhelm the lovers. While the girls appear to be the ones taking control over whether to sustain their relationships, they are in fact still fragile and emotional.
None can escape making a decision that will hurt their significant other. Considering the important phase of life that gundae occupies in the life of young Korean adults — every college student worries about it — it's surprising that Crazy Waiting is one of the Korean film industry's few explorations of this issue.
The mandatory military service is regarded by some young adults as an annoyance due to its length. "Crazy Waiting" ("The Longest 24 Months") approaches the concept from an optimistic yet critical viewpoint. It presents a different ending for each couple.

However, Makoto has feelings for another student named Miyuki (Kuroki Meisa). Shizuru decides that if Makoto likes Miyuki, she wants to like her too. She wants to like everything that he does. One day, she tells Makoto that she wants to take a photo of them kissing in the forest for a competition. He obliges for her sake, and they kiss in the forest for the first time. However, from that day on, Shizuru disappears from Makato’s life…

From the writer of Im ai ni yukimasu ( that happens to be one of my favorite movies... ever), comes this new Japanese romance drama.

It tells the story of a love triangle between 3 university students ( the ambiance reminded me of the drama Orange days quite a bit).
One of them is our main protagonist. A shy, intense and mysterious young man who loves photography ( The actor is Hiroshi Tamaki also known as Chiaki sempai from Nodame's fame ^^) The second character is a shy, rather mysterious girl, who lacks self confidence but is cute and amazingly pure of heart. Did I mention she was really cute ? The actress, Aoi Miyazaki also played one of the leads for Nana 1 ( They changed her for Nana 2 because she was shooting tada kimi wo at the time) The third one is the perfect girl. Beautiful, feminine, smart, confident. She is played by Meisa Kuroki ( who also plays the 'french' girl in "Haikei, Chichiue-sama") Our two main protagonists are, a bit like in Ima, unsure of the feelings of the other one.
The score is great, especially the ending music that I have been listening on my ipod non stop for a few months now :) It's by Ootsuka Ai ( Renai Shashin).
The acting is first rate, especially by Aoi Miyazaki, the movie really revolves around her even is she isn't the main protagonist. Some of the university friends do suffer from over acting but they have a very minor role so it's not really disturbing.
The scenery and photography, as it is usually the case in Japanese movies, is very beautiful and skillfully rendered.
Yet I have to admit, I felt Ima Ai ni yukimasu was better in pretty much all aspects.
Mild spoilers follow ( I don't really say what happens in the end but you might guess it from my comments) There's a surprising twist at the end of the movie. At first, I must admit I felt a bit cheated (it is quite a common trick often used in Asian cinema, especially in Korean movies).
But then, once it had settled in, it's actually quite a beautiful ending. I still can't help but feel slightly frustrated because of what I think is a missed opportunity of character development....

I really hesitated for rating this movie between a 7 and a 8. I guess it's a 7.6. There's something missing and I still think it is because of the ending that happens a bit too fast and is not as intense as it should be.
If you loved Ima, ai ni yukimasu, you will like Tada, kimi wo aishiteru ( 'Just, I love you' or as the international title says Heavenly forest)

It captures the feel of Feudal Japan very well. Samurai of that period were so involved with their sword style and technique that it seeped into there personality and very soul. Most upheld strict conduct in their technique. This story is about a man whose style is so devious and frankly brutal that it turns him into a mirror image of his technique. Think Lord of the Rings and Frodo's battle with the ring or Star Wars and the battle betweeen Light and Dark forces. It is much better than Star Wars and is just as deep and creepy as Lord of the Rings. Nakadai' acting is flawless and he draws you right into the story. Toshiro Mifune also has a few good parts and a great battle scene. I have let many friends watch this movie (almost none of which had ever watched a subtitled movie) and every one of them Loved it. It's also one of those movies that draws you you in even more with repeated viewings, as you catch a lot of little things that are integral with the story. BUY IT and watch repeatedly!

With a price on his head, Ichi seeks tranquillity in a favorite village. Since his last visit, it has fallen prey to Boss Masagoro, the son of a merchant rumored to have stolen gold from the shogunate. The boss has hired Yojimbo as his hard-drinking enforcer, but Yojimbo is both a spy for the shogunate, trying to find the gold, and in love with the merchant's unwilling mistress, Umeno. Ichi hires on as the merchant's masseur and buys Umeno's freedom with his employer's own money. This embarrasses Yojimbo who withdraws from a pact with Ichi to stir up trouble between father and son and their gangs. As the two sides fight, Ichi finds the gold and sets up a final set of confrontations.

My earlier comments about Z...to Y... were meant to convey the idea that Zatoichi films are a genre unto themselves. Like the Chinese films of myth and legend, rich with the mystical and supernatural power of its heroes (on which the current Xena and Hercules are molded) Zatoichi films have a certain style which sets them apart.

I could suggest the Clouseau-esque qualities of the everyman protagonist who is handicapped and endowed with with preternatural ability. But that would be but a Western approximation (and a poor one at that) of an Eastern (perhaps uniquely Japanese) archtype.

Words do not suffice - see any other Zatoichi film and it will be apparent why Zatoichi has reached cult status.

Even after seeing this movie more than 20 times it still draws me in. Some of the best actors in Japan take part in this flim, most noticeable is Beat Takeshi. The story line is simply jaw dropping. This is the type of film that Hollywood probably wouldn't even dare make. To me the subject matter isn't shocking, but I've spent time in Japan and studied their language and culture extensively, but some people are offended by this. Simply because they cannot get past the little detail that these strong, powerful men can have gay tendencies.

The movie follows Kano Sozaburo as he joins the Shinshigumi (feudal era police). (Also not here that most of the main characters, except Kano and Tashiro are based off actual historical/famous people.) As Kano joins the rank, his beauty and sword skill captivate the men around him, from the other new recruit to the top ranking officers. Suddenly people begin to die, murdered in the night. Any more will give away the story.

IF you get the chance to see this movie do. For some it may be hard to get all the details and understand the little intricacies involved, and the ending may confuse some (especially if you are just going off what the subtitles say). But give it a chance, it's a wonderful film, but not for everyone (and not for the whole family ;)

The blind masseur and former samurai Zatôichi (Takeshi Kitano) is drifting and arrives in a small village dominated by three tyrannical lords, Inosuke Ginzo (Ittoku Kishibe), Tashichi Ogi (Saburo Ishikura) and Funahachi (Koji Koike). He helps an old woman and she lodges him at her home. Zatôichi gambles and the old lady's nephew, a complete loser, becomes close to him and Zatôichi helps him in the bets. They meet the geishas Seitaro 'Osei' Naruto (Daigorô Tachibana) and Okinu Naruto (Yuuko Daike), actually a brother and a sister that have been chasing the killers of their parents, Inosuke, Tashichi and Kuchinawa, for ten years seeking revenge. When the ronin Shinkichi (Gadarukanaru Taka) offers his service of bodyguard to Ginzo, the boss decide to destroy the Funachi gang and join to Ogi later. This is a strange one, a drama/comedy/action film with absurdist overtones. In Japan, Zatoichi is a cult character who was the subject of 26 feature films between 1963 and 1989. Now director "Beat" Takeshi – best known for Hana Bi – introduces Zatoichi to a new generation. Takeshi also stars as Zatoichi, the elderly masseur and dice gambler whose hearing is so acute he can detect which side a die has fallen. He's a master swordsman, too – one slice and you're diced.

Supporting characters include two beautiful geishas avenging their parents' death, a farmer and her drunkard nephew, the gangsters running the town and a masterless samurai (an impressive performance from Tadanobu Asano).

The Blind Swordsman is great fun, although it could do with a tighter structure. And I was shocked by the spectacular tap-dancing finale – in traditional Japanese dress and shoes!

Wow... This movie totally blew me away... I'm not easily as touched as I were with this movie. I litterally had to pause it several times not to weep like baby. I haven't been this moved since the movie Heaven & Earth with Tommy Lee Jones, a drama about poverty and sadness, war and it's affect on people

This movie straight hit's the roof. I got tears, and a clogged throat. Normally I don't watch too many dramas, but this one I saw in a hunch.

I, without a doubt, give this 10 / 10 in the category of dramas! Respect the Samurai's! Respect those who throughout time died for bloodfeuds between clan's, starvation, and honor.

This is clearly a masterpiece! It deserves an Oscar.

'Dororo' a tale of lost opportunity (and body parts).
Directed by Akihiko Shiota. Cast: Ko Shibasaki, Satoshi Tsumabuki, Kiichi Nakai, Mieko Harada, Kumiko Aso.
There are so many reasons why Dororo, touted by Toho as a supernatural samurai action flick, ought to succeed in such a cross-genre context.

One: Its fight sequences are supervised by Ching Siu-tung - the man who choreographed the giddy brawls in Zhang Yimou's martial art romps House of Flying Daggers (2004) and Hero (2002), and previously directed the hilarious Jet Lee/Takeshi Kaneshiro action spoof, Dr. Wai and the Scripture Without Words (1996).

Next: There's the pivotal acting triumvirate of Ko Shibasaki, who was a revelation as the ruthless Mitsuko in Batoru Rowaiaru (aka Battle Royale, 2000), along with Satoshi Tsumabuki (Waterboys), and Kiichi Nakai.

Nakai was as eloquently dramatic in Mibu Gishi Den (When the Last Sword is Drawn, 2003) as he was effortlessly funny in the "Samurai Cellular" segment of filmic anthology Yo nimo Kimyo na Monogatari: Eiga no Tokubetsuhen (Tales of the Unusual, 2000).

Lastly, the story: originally a manga series penned in the late '60s by the late Osamu Tezuka - he who also created the legendary Tetsuwan Atomu (Astro Boy) and Janguru Taitei (Kimba the White Lion).

Yet, in spite of all these positives, director Akihiko Shiota conspires to produce a live-action movie lacking in ingredients essential for any genre: a decent plot, solid acting, or believable special effects.

For starters, Shibasaki is just too old (at 25) to kid around playing the wild, street-smart child thief of the title, and Tsumabuki lacks the charismatic stamina to retain the focus as the film's lead.

Nakai, our hero's misguided father, summons up a surprisingly lackluster performance; he's merely nonplussed even about having five arrows stuck in his back while conjuring up a host of evil demons.

These actors, along with the criminally underused Mieko Harada (an Akira Kurosawa veteran), suffer at the hands of Shiota, who previously helmed irresolute outings like Kanaria (2005) and Yomigaeri (2002).

More pertinently, Tezuka's original source material borders upon the macabre, which in this context undermines what really aspires to be a light-hearted buddy movie.

Perhaps the scribe's expert knowledge as the holder of a medical degree accounts for this uncomfortable focus, and the way in which the yarn offers a strenuous nod in the direction of Frankenstein's monster.

It goes like this: Hyakkimaru (Tsumabuki) is born without 48 body parts, because they were filched from him in a prenatal deal initialed by his samurai dad (Nakai) with those aforementioned demons.

The baby, which brings to mind Eraserhead, is lobbed into a casket and launched down a river, all Moses-like, then chances to be rescued by an alchemist who has the ability to fashion replacement parts - just so Hyakkimaru can head out, team up with the boisterous Dororo (Shibasaki), slay the demons, and retrieve his real bits and pieces.

Different scenes suggest a diverse array of influences. One tavern scene looks like it came straight from Conan the Barbarian, while some talking rats seem to be accessories from The Goodies.

It's all too clear that Shiota - like Tezuka before him - isn't quite sure whether to pursue the supernatural, the bawdy, a good laugh, or full-on action - and instead confuses the whole caboodle.

For a film edited from highlights of two films in a series of six, SHOGUN ASSASSIN is far, FAR better than it has any right to be. That said, track down the originals since they are all available on video in widescreen, subtitled editions. The cinematography will make you drool, and the swordfighting is probably the most impressive samurai-type swordwork ever put on film. Another plus is Lone Wolf, played by Tomisaburo Wakayama. Casting him for a handsome comic book hero is not what would come to mind immediately, but it is his middle-aged dumpiness that makes him utterly believeable during his fight scenes. Swordfight fans, you will reach Nirvana during this orgy of carnage! For a more impressive display of Wakayama's skills, check out LIGHTNING SWORDS OF DEATH (frequently found in rental shops as LUPINE WOLF), the third film in the Lone Wolf series which was actually released in the states six years before SHOGUN ASSASSIN during the kung fu movie craze. In LIGHTNING SWORDS, the film remains totally unedited from the original and features a showdown between Lone Wolf and army that is equipped with not just swords, but arrows and rifles as well!!!

His efforts are complicated by the arrival of the wily Unosuke, the son of one of the gangsters, who owns a revolver. Unosuke has Sanjuro beaten after he reunites an abducted woman with her husband and son, then massacres his father's opponents. During the slaughter, the samurai escapes with the help of the innkeeper; but while recuperating at a nearby temple, he learns of innkeeper's abduction by Unosuke, and returns to the town to confront him.

Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo is a not too long, not too short action film that uses its action with just the right touches of voracity and excitement, and in the backdrop is also a sense of humor to the process. If I had to recommend a Kurosawa film to someone who's never seen one before (and might be impatient to sit through the three and a half hour Seven Samurai, or might not get the non-linear structure of Rashomon), I'd put this one in their hands to try out.

Kurosawa regular Toshiro Mifune is terrific as Sanjuro Kuwabatake, a drifter of a samurai who stumbles upon a town with an assorted cast of characters, with a split between two gangs. One of the gangsters, Unosuke (Nakadai), is the only one in town; it seems, with a gun. At first Sanjuro plays each side, but when he gets beaten roughly by whom he was "protecting", he realizes the fun's over, and it's time to fight back.

Much has been made about how Sergio Leone took Kurosawa's story and characters (most in particular being a rogue from out of town) and made them into his breakthrough Fistful of Dollars- Kurosawa even sued Leone over the story rights. But to those who wonder whether Yojimbo is 'better' than Fistful or vice versa need to remember one of two things- Kurosawa took the story from Dashiell Hammett's gangster novel Red Harvest, so neither filmmaker is making something really original; and that since each film is made in a different continent, and with the slightest different sensibilities about its characters. For one thing in Yojimbo guns are scarcer than in Fistful, and there's a treatment Kurosawa has with his actors that sets it apart from the small town western scope of Leone's weapons and actors. So each film (noticeably) carries its own kind of visual style while working in a similar plot structure. In other words, it's kind of like comparing apples and oranges picked in the same farm (if that makes at all sense).

Overall, Yojimbo on its own is a lean, cool Japanese crime/action film, helmed by a master, and featuring a number of highlights to look forward to on multiple viewings. Some of those include: the scene inside Seibei's brothel (with the women dancing and singing), Masaru Sato's wonderful musical orchestrations, Mifune's curiously low-key and rough performance (which did and didn't serve as inspiration to Clint), and a climax that is up there with one of Kurosawa's finest battles.

It's nice to see a romantic comedy that does not have the prissy man lead, this has solid acting from both male leads and also from the female lead and although the story is a little long and a little cliché you cant help but like it.

I think the story was a little rushed at the end, but extending that would have made the story even longer. Superior to other romantic comedies such as 100 days with Mr arrogant, and possibly tied with my tutor friend.

It would make an interesting introduction to Korean cinema, not as great as My sassy girl, but still good.

This remake of a little-known Irish film called About Adam features popular Korean idol Lee Byung-Hun (JSA) as a modern day Don Juan who ends up bedding a trio of sisters, while at the same time irrevocably changing their lives which begs the question, is it a change for the better?

The story is about a man who meets the youngest of three sisters and then ends up influencing all of their lives in the most charismatic way. He tries his best to uplift their spirits by giving them closure and a friend. This is by no means a lewd flick and has a lot of class in the field of direction and acting. The ending fits the movie but not many people may like it.

This is a definitely worth a watch but don't expect it to be anything to the tune of "My sassy girl" which in my opinion is the best romantic movie to come out of Korea in recent times. This one however has very good acting from LEE and CHOI with good support from rest of the cast. The flavour of the movie is of the typical Korean romance flick but needs to have a much more solid script which goes helter-skelter from time to time.

Not having seen the MWiaG "1' and "2" earlier versions this was viewed as standalone with no expectations of being part 3 of a trilogy. Story begins in Hong Kong, a gangster turf war between high style pros, a daughter is sent away for safety and chooses.....Korea. Switch to Seoul and the local mob are somewhat less slick and professional. Chinese gal and Korean gang live for a time in small house, throw in a Korean/Chinese translator who puts her own spin on the conversations, a Korean gang turf war, a hit squad, chase scenes, martial arts, swordplay, a budding relationship...A definite homage with Kill Bill and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon type action (G rated). So far so good. The downside is some highly cringe-inducing romance, why does Aryoung fall for Ki-chul anyways? And the over-the-top buffoonery.

I've watched this movie with a low expectation. Probably, because the critics gave such horrible reviews. But right from the start the movie grabs your attention. Especially, if you watched the first one and you liked it, you'll love this one. I thought the story was well carried out. The second one has more action and better story. Even though it is not as funny as the first one, I would definitely reccommend the second one. If you like Korean Action/Comedy movies, do not miss this one! Just as hilarious as the first!

MWIAG is an action comedy, based I believe on a Korean comic series. The blend is biased a little towards the comedy side, but what quantity the action might like is more than made up for by quality.

Backdrop: Cha Eun-Jin has been raised as a Jopog (gangster) since childhood, and has risen through the ranks to 'Big Brother', no. 2 in the organisation. She also happens to be a female, but this is a detail that is largely considered to be irrelevant - especially by her. She's smart, confident, ruthless, and as luck would have it a fantastic fighter. The movie begins with a fight, filmed in the rain with dark shadows and slow motion creating a very artful effect. Two gangster are up against a group of many, and about to get killed when their savior appears - Eun-Jin silhouetted against the light looking full on comic-book cool before she somersaults into the ground and spins, kicks, twists, rolls and slashes her way through all comers. The dark lighting, rain and camerawork create a wonderful look and mood for this, and the choreography is easily up to anything Hong Kong has offered us for years. Short, but very sweet.
The movie is paced quite gently, shifting from amusing situation to amusing situation without feeling the need to hurry the plot along too fast. Action scenes break out quite frequently, but there is a marked difference between the 3 scenes in which Eun-Jin fights (beginning, middle and end) and the remainder of the action. Her men, the thugs, fight street - grappling, stumbling, beating with whatever they can reach. Sometimes this is played for laughs, sometimes not. Realistic, but not massively exciting. When Eun-Jin fights however... it is a thing of beauty. Clearly modelled on HK action, with a little Samurai thrown in too, these scenes are amazingly choreographed and filmed. Between this and Bichunmoo (which MWIAG easily surpasses), and hopefully Musa when it arrives, it looks like Korea is making a very strong bid for Hong Kong's action crown.....

Comment :
"Guisi" is an original and dramatic ghost story with characters well developed and great special effects. However, the confused screenplay is weird and flawed in some moments, with an absolute lack of explanation for many situations. For example, how Hashimoto walks in the ceiling of the director's bedroom? Why the ghosts kill when the person looks in their eyes? Why the mother dies exactly when Tung reaches her room? There are many other situations without a satisfactory explanation, but it is worthwhile watching this film. My vote is seven.

I've been intrigued by Thai Voodoo for the longest time, not that I would want to be on the receiving end of it, but it makes you wonder the amount of clout and (real?) ability of these medicine men who put hexes and curses on your behalf, for a small fee. And it always seem that what they do to you, from simple artifacts like a voodoo doll, can inflict so much pain onto your real self with just a simple needle poked on a right position on the straw doll.

Art of the Devil 2 is not a sequel, in that it has no relation to the first (which I am now intrigued to watch as it stars Chai-Lai Angel Supaksorn Chaimongkol), although they deal with the same supernatural forces in Thai lore. It tells a story of a physically attractive model teacher, Ms Panor (Napakpapha Nakprasitte), and her group of students, one of whom she is a stepmother to. However, as with all misunderstandings, it stems off with what the eyes see and the ears here, and the mind believing. With black magic in the works, things are never what it seems, as the group of students revisit their teacher a few years after a tragic and shameful incident happened in school. Why, you'll never understand, but we need something to have them all put together to get something going.....

"Art of the Devil" is Thanit Jitnukul's first stab at horror which tells the story about one family's disaster after the father's mistress uses black magic to get revenge against him.The back of my VCD says:a mysterious and bizarre murder of a millionaire's entire family grips the attention of the public.Not a clue is uncovered; not a person can be fingered as the killer.The mysterious and gruesome deaths baffle everyone.A crime reporter goes to investigate the case, which leads to a beautiful lady.How can he convince others that she is the mistress of the occult,a witch who is skilled in the art of the devil."Art of the Devil" offers some gruesome effects including eels vomiting and bloody regurgitation.The acting is mediocre,but the film is quite interesting.Still there is not enough tension for my liking,but if you like horror films which deal with black magic you can give it a try.

This story comes from the Japanese manga (graphic novel) called "Basilisk," and is heavily edited from it. They cut out half the characters for the sake of easy and time. Although unfortunate, I agree that they had to do it, and they did a good job of making a "short" movie plot out of long series. The special effects are breathtaking. They must have combined computer animation, and paid attention to every little detail down to making the eyes shine and reflect light in the two main characters when they're talking. I liken it to House of Flying Daggers or one of those Chinese flicks that are beautiful and have a lot of attention to detail. I love how they managed the occasional slow motion scenes. The acting is top notch. I hate love stories but I took to this one. It's not all love, and the action scenes are well choreographed and exciting. Ninjas fight, but they're not the kind of ninjas to be clothed in black jumpers with masks. The "special abilities" don't look corny or contrived, which impressed me.

"My Mighty Princess," a new romantic comedy directed by Kwak Jae-yong, is finally hitting theaters this month after a delay of more than two years, raising hopes among fans who still remember the filmmaker's hit, "My Sassy Girl."

The delay illustrates the deepening problems plaguing Korean cinema, when even work by a widely recognized filmmaker such as Kwak has to overcome a slew of hurdles.

Director Kwak, however, seemed relieved about the prospect at a press conference held in Apgujeong-dong on Tuesday.

"All the cast members signed on to the project because they counted on me, but they have been deceived. When I showed my screenplay to them, I told them all the wire action scenes would be done by doubles or stunts, but in fact the actors had to do all the wire actions themselves," Kwak joked.

The new movie follows Kwak's trademark format: a romantic comedy where a powerful female character gets involved with a weaker male. In "My Sassy Girl," Jun Ji-hyun played the quirky, fist-swinging girl and Cha Tae-hyun brought to life a passive yet kind-hearted Korean man.

In "My Mighty Princess," Shin Min-a ("Volcano High," "Sad Movie") plays So-hui, a martial arts prodigy, and her male partner is Il-young, played by On Ju-wan. As the plot involves so many martial arts skills, plenty of wire action sequences have been included and, thanks to the far longer-than-expected post-production period, those unrealistic images have been sharpened and honed by the film's computer graphics team.

Kwak said his new flick, however, differs from his previous melodramatic comedies such as "Classic" and "My Sassy Girl." "The new film is concerned about bright aspects - action, conflict, rather than emotions. The entertainment aspect plays a central part, so please just enjoy the show," Kwak said.

Kwak's assurance came after a painful delay that lasted two and a half years. Up until now, rumors grew that the project would never be produced given the repeated decisions to put off the release schedule.

Shin Min-a, the heroine of the film, also expressed her relief about the finalized schedule. "Two years and six months have passed since we started post-production work, during which time I have completed three other films. I was a bit worried about my attitude toward this movie because of the delay, but I'm confident now that I love this movie and have great expectations," she said.

On Ju-wan, who plays a character opposite Shin's, said he was also very worried about the fate of the film project. "At one point, I talked to director Kwak and half-jokingly said I wanted a personal copy so that I could at least watch it at home by myself," he said.

"When the delay lasted for one year, my anxiety soared. But strangely enough, when the delay lasted for two years, I came to think of the project in a positive way, and it seemed like everything would work out after all," On said.

There, he learns of the fate of his son-in-law, a young samurai who sought work at the house but was instead barbarically forced to commit traditional hara-kiri in an excruciating manner with a dull bamboo blade. In flashbacks the samurai tells the tragic story of his son-in-law, and how he was forced to sell his real sword to support his sick wife and child. "Harakiri" ("Seppuku") (Japanese, 1962): It is the 17th century. A young Samurai warrior arrives at a mansion, asking to perform his ritual death there. In a series of flashbacks, we learn who he is, why he came, and what has occurred since. Although quietly told by another ex-warrior (about whom we also learn more), this is an interesting story that builds in complexity and tension. Debates about rituals and appearances may at first seem to hold more significance in old Japan than in the contemporary United States, but it is not difficult to translate and implement such thoughts. Love, honor, duty, family, children, saving "face", determination, desperation…they all exist in OUR everyday lives. Dramatically photographed in beautiful black & white, given a strong Japanese score, and paced so that even the mildly patient will be glad they saw it, "Harakiri" is epically huge, and a must-see for story & film lovers.

In 17th century Japan, farmers in a small village face the prospect of again losing their crops to a band of roving thieves. Their solution is to go to the nearest city and see if they can hire samurai to protect them. The farmers are poor and can only offer food and lodging but they soon recruit Kambei Shimada who determines that they will need a total of seven samurai to properly guard the village. Slowly, he recruits other samurai for their task and once complete, move tho the village. There they teach the farmers basic self defense and fortify the village itself. When the bandits attack, they are prepared but suffer many losses.

Having seen Kurosawa's Seven Samurai at least 10 times, I still see something new every time I watch it. I don't see how anyone, especially a non-Japanese, could possibly absorb this movie in less than 2 or 3 viewings. I've always been surprised at how each of the 7 samurai can make such an individual impression on you even if you can't understand Japanese. Although Toshiro Mifune is often considered the star, for me its Takashi Shimura who is firmly fixed at the center of the movie. He is the guiding moral force from the moment of his appearance in the film and can capture the viewer's attention in a way similar to Alec Guinness. Mifune's character can be annoying at first in his loutish behavior, but he gains stature throughout the film and eventually becomes a unifying force second only to Shimura. Minoru Chiaki as the woodcutting samurai provides a subtle humor and the others look to him to boost their morale. Daisuke Kato is another very familiar face to Japanese movie fans and provides an excellent foil to Shimura as his second in command. Yoshio Inaba is very good as the samurai who is recruited by Shimura and quickly builds a strong rapport with him. Seiji Miyaguchi as the "expert" warrior, dedicated to honing his skill as a swordsman is a very low key yet likeable character. Ko Kimura as the young hero-worshipping samurai, as well as the love interest of the peasant girl, wishes to be a great samurai, but is easily distracted by a field of flowers or a pretty face. The peasants in the village being defended by the samurai each have their own defining characteristics as well....

A humble and simple Takezo abandons his life as a knight errant. He's sought as a teacher and vassal by Shogun, Japan's most powerful clan leader. He's also challenged to fight by the supremely confident and skillful Sasaki Kojiro. Takezo agrees to fight Kojiro in a year's time but rejects Shogun's patronage, choosing instead to live on the edge of a village, raising vegetables. He's followed there by Otsu and later by Akemi, both in love with him. The year ends as Takezo assists the villagers against a band of brigands. He seeks Otsu's forgiveness and accepts her love, then sets off across the water to Ganryu Island for his final contest.

This film is the final installment of director Hiroshi Inagaki's "Samurai Trilogy," three films covering the life of Musashi Miyamoto (Takezo,) Japan's most famous swordsman of the early 17th century and perhaps of all time.
He was an icon of the warrior-philosopher model. He survived numerous duels to the death and retired to painting and writing. His best known work is the "Book of Five Rings," a book which gained popularity recently when it was championed by the Harvard Business School.
All three films of Inagaki's trilogy, made in 1954, 1955, and 1956, are part of the elite Criterion Collection of classic films.
Briefly, this movie resolves the conflict of the two women in Takezo's life, Otsu and Akemi, and leads up to Musashi's showdown with the second most famous swordsman of the day, Sasaki Kojiro. This is the famous Duel at Ganryu Island of the title.
Although I cannot appreciate the Japanese language and must rely on the English subtitles for the meaning of dialog, I do appreciate the beauty of this early widescreen color film. (I believe Tojoscope is a Japanese version of cinemascope.) One could take almost every frame of this film and it would make a stunning still. The costumes and the sets reflect an attention to detail of color, lighting and composition.
For its sense of rather understated action, I particularly enjoyed the opening scene. Sasaki Kojiro demonstrates his signature Swallowtail Turn, a move whereby he severs the tail feathers of this notably swift and agile bird in flight. It's not the portrayed animal cruelty that I enjoyed; it's the human quickness and skill that would be required to accomplish such a feat. I certainly hope that no birds were actually harmed in the making of the film.

The great cast that was in Musashi Miyamoto, the first part of this samurai trilogy continues in the second part with a few additions.
By this time Musashi Miyamoto has been on the road for three years and is still learning. The most important lesson as a Samurai will not be learned until the film is almost over. Another important lesson comes quickly after that, and it will interesting to see how it plays out in the final part.
In the opening Musashi Miyamoto is doing battle with a samurai similar to our buddy Hanzo. They are the only two I have ever seen use chains.
After this he heads to Kyoto to do battle with the best in the capital, and also to get himself mixed up with the two women who are in love with him.
Love, fickleness, treachery, rape, revenge, honor, and great sword fighting all have a place in this magnificent film.
The amazing cinematography and scenery also place an important part.
This is truly a samurai classic.

Samurai I - Musashi Miyamoto (1954

The Samurai Trilogy is based around the life of the historical character Musashi Miyamoto. Born around 1584, he perfected the technique of two sword fighting, as well as developing into a considerable Zen black ink artist. Having fought his first duel at the age of thirteen, he was involved in 60 other engagements before his death in 1645. Several versions of his life have been produced for cinema and television in Japan, but none more prestigious than Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1955, it was also Toho's first foray into colour.

The first episode of the trilogy covers Miyamoto's formative years, as he emerges from rural obscurity to search for fame and glory in civil war, but returns home a broken man. Brought back to sanity through the love of a warm hearted girl, she persuades him to place himself under the spiritual guidance of an unorthodox Buddhist priest. His methods of teaching the ways of enlightenment would make the fiercest of Zen masters seem positively gentle. Gaining in spiritual stature and insight, Miyamoto is forced to choose between settling for domestic happiness or continuing his search for perfection in the art of the sword.

A wild orphan runs off to join the war but after a bitter defeat he finds himself being sought after for murder. He is rescued by a monk who then forces him to train as a samurai. The first forty minutes of this thing really, really bored me with its rather confusing storyline but once our hero is captured the film really picked up and in the end I was highly entertained by this thing. Directed by Hiroshi Inagaki.
I have yet to get to the sequels but I've heard they get even better.

Lovely Complex ( Love Com 2006 )

Risa, a tall Japanese girl, gets rejected by a boy because she is taller than him. Otani, a short Japanese guy, gets rejected by a girl because he is shorter than her. Obviously these two would never be able to make it as a couple right? Well love doesn’t always follow such logic as Lovely Complex will show.

When dealing with manga-to-movie adaptations (or any adaptation for that matter), the director and his staff have to be very careful with the material that they have at their disposal. When all is said and done, and the film is released, the reaction to it can lead numerous paths. For instance, the film could be a disservice to the original fan base, displeasing hardcore fans alike. On the flip side, the film could also follow the route of being a faithful adaptation that could win over new fans as well as please the existing fans. "Love Com" is the rare case where the film is neither considered a "fan service" or "fan disservice", at least when I viewed it.

The film's storyline is the reiteration of the manga "Lovely Comlex". The main quirk of the manga is its two protagonists, Risa Koizumi and Atsushi Otani, who although with their considerable height differences, begin to fall for one another. In the film version, Risa is played by model Ema Fujisawa while Atsushi is played by singer and drama star Teppei Koike. The casting was a highlight for the film, with each of the lead roles, as well as the supporting cast, providing an accurate outwardly depiction of the manga cast. The use of vibrant colors throughout the film as well as the creative costume designs were also highlights of the film. Where the film falters though is the incredibly overreacting acting from the cast. Each character is so widely animated it gets to be a little irritating after awhile. I understand the use of facial expressions in order to express to the viewer what the character is going through, but the over abundant use just wears out over time. Combine this with a plot that is so thin, you can guess what happens next, and you got yourself a ticket to cinema clichéville.....

The two become intimate friends and spend a lot of time together. Whats the melody you played the first day we met? asked Lun, Thats my secret. Yu whispered in his ear.

Surprisingly good~ I was just expecting a decent delicate love story, Bu neng shuo de mi mi(Secret) didn't disappoint me on that, but there is much more - a beautiful thrilling fantasy film it is! The first half is full of witty romantic plots, they do occasionally seem a little gratuitous, but very entertaining indeed, more importantly,they have you absorbed into the atmosphere easily. And you would probably say to yourself, yeah it is an ordinary romance film with a delicate but predictable storyline.

Then, it proves you wrong in an amazing way. It keeps on bringing enjoyable surprises, bringing the film onto the next level. The dialog is not pretentious or overused, the story unfolds itself in a natural manner. And then you will realize it's not another ordinary feel-good romance.

Have to mention, the score produced by the Singer/Songwriter/Pianist/Actor director Jay Chou is outstanding and impressive, and really becomes an integral part of the film.

Sammi Cheng plays Mimi Mo, a young exchange student to Japan who met and fell in love with a budding pianist, Kurokawa, played by Rikiya Kurokawa. Kurokawa eventually leaves to study music in the USA and returns to Japan as a famous musician. Meanwhile, Mimi has dealt with her depression by eating and weights over 300lbs and Kurokawa doesn't recognize her. Mimi eventually meets Fatty (Andy Lau) who helps her lose the weight so she can fulfill her promise of meeting Kurokawa made 10 years earlier. But then they fall in love.....

Comment :
Sammi Cheng can be goofy, annoying and sometimes downright charming. In this movie, I suspect she's a bit of all 3.

There are times when this movie is downright silly and I'm not entirely sure if that's a great thing or not. Personally, one of most enjoyable scenes of this film is when she sees her former sweetheart at his concert and loses it-- you kind of have to see it to believe it.

The big moral to this movie is 1) that looks can be deceiving and 2) don't judge a book by its cover. Sammi's eccentric acting style is nicely balanced by Lau's performance. But there are times when both seem too much for words. In the end, however, a quirkiness runs throughout the film which is its saving grace-- otherwise there were times when it could have turned dangerously unfunny. On the whole, however, it is a definitely an off-beat romantic comedy.

I don't get it. All you have to do is scrounge every penny you can get and throw it on decent SFX. Then get a couple of girls to throw off their clothes. The successful recipe for a good exploitation movie. Girls Rebel Force does the second alright, but slacks on everything else.

The nonsensical plot involves a dangerous virus that turns schoolgirls into zombies (unless they swimmed in the pool) and an evil master that trains a young girl to become a killer and water terrorist (?!#%!). This satanic mastermind dresses in impeccable red suits like some kind of yakuza Nick Cave, seduces young girls by playing the flute then rapes them. Also said flute has the annoying tendency to sound like a church organ and occasionally it may play by itself in the background while the evil master has sex. There's also a 5 minute lesbian scene where two young girls get buck naked, kiss like fish and fondle each other's breasts. There are made-up-in-the-editing-room fights that make Godfrey Ho stuff look like Citizen Kane and the ending is a complete Takashi Miike rip-off (Fudoh/Dead or Alive) only with Sega Mega Drive CGI. A scene turns from night to day (continuity is for the art-house). The soundtrack was probably done on Cuebase and is double-bass full-on metal one moment, cheapo electronica the next. During a fight scene an electric guitar starts solo-ing out of nowhere for no good reason. I'm telling you, everything is WAY off here. I should have known what I was getting into when the credits announced "Derected by".....

Back in high school, some friends of mine and I used to watch this almost every week. A couple years ago, one of them e-mailed me out of the blue with a link to a website discussing it, complete with audio clips. I ran to ebay and ordered a used VHS right away. Now my wife is hooked on it, and we've started showing it to our friends.

I can't post spoilers, because as many times as I've seen it, I still never know what to expect next. I think some of the scenes might be out of order.

If you were amused by the flying and running up vertical surfaces in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, wait until you see this. And the baffling endings of Strangelove and 2001 scarcely hold a candle to the sudden tacked-on weirdness here.

I know this film as "Ninja Wars", but maybe it's available under some of it's other titles. The Ninja Wars VHS version features crazy dubbing with poor translations and silly voices. Wouldn't be the same without it.

Eight mysterious crystals from the body of a long-dead princess now identify the eight samurai who are destined to help a beautiful young princess overcome a curse on her family. They go against an evil queen who bathes in blood to retain her youthfulness. The queen and her son live in a castle protected by many monsters and goblins and assorted apparitions, including giant flying snakes. Many swords, lots of sorcery and plenty of blood.

Comment :
Some wonderful pagentry and costumes, but limited actions. This movie has a lot of really great possibilities for some intense character development, but the majority of these threads are cut before the actors have the opportunity to bring out the full potential. The Eight Samurai are closer to being ninja than warriors, some of them not using typical weapons, the young hero fighting with a pair of kama.

Some intense magic being used. Instead of using the two hours plus to develop characters and help explain some of the magic happenings, things are really dragged out. The last half hour of the film is by far the best, with some good action scenes and a relatively happy ending. Typical of most Japanese films, the majority of the good guys sacrifice themselves for the good of the whole, with some rather surprising aspects.

The sound dubbing is below average on this one, with some drawn out, semi-romantic scenes with 80's pop music thrown in behind them. Most of the special effects, with the exception of the giant 'millipede' are surprisingly good for the era.

“Koizora” is a love story that was originally published on the popular cell phone site Mahou no iRando. It was authored by new writer Mika, and is based on her own experiences. The story was released in book form last October, selling more than a million copies in its first month. The story revolves around Mika (named after the author), who falls in love with her classmate, Hiroki, upon entering high school. But over the course of the novel, she ends up suffering through many trials, such as rape, abortion, and betrayal.

Comment :
This film is one of the amazingly touching Japanese drama films. In truth, I only started watching the film due to the fact of Haruma Miura playing the lead male character.. Well I'm certainly glad I did watch it!

The basic story line itself is quite a simple one, two young lovers fighting through many hardships to remain together. Of course, there are twists and more complications within the story :)

Everything within the film is very well directed and tastefully done, the actors/actresses despite their young ages (Yui - 19, Haruma - 17 at film release) acted amazingly well and you really feel for Hiro and Mika through out the film.

I would recommend this film to anyone I know, although, due to the fact it is a tearjerker.. make sure your not already very upset over something or I doubt you'll stop crying... It took me a long time!

In modern-day Japan, the worlds of the human and the yokai often collide, and usually not in the most pleasant of manners. Half-human and half-yokai, one-eyed Kitaro (Wentz Eiji) lives in Gegege Forest with his bickering friends Nezumi Otoko (Oizumi Yo) and Neko Musume (Tanaka Rena) and his eyeball father, and he dedicates his time to maintaining peace between humans and yokai. When a magical ball of power ends up in the wrong hands, Kitaro must recover it or both worlds could fall into grave danger.

Comment :
Coming in on the heels of Miike's "Great Yokai War" there's nothing this Yokai themed film can do but be compared to it. Unfortunately that's a tough hurdle but since Miike couldn't keep all of his adult perversity out of a kid-friendly film maybe the producers thought there was a chance for them with this one.

The art direction is fine and the whole production is decent looking. Unfortunately a few mistakes really pull this movie down. First is the casting of Pop TV star Eiji Wentz for the main role. He seems like a nice guy but brings very little inspiration to the role of Kitaro. Later in the film when he's supposed to be falling in love with the sister, we need the other Yokai to verbally inform us that this has occurred since Wentz is unable to convey the emotion at all. However it's probable that the young teen girls who are fans of his couldn't care less how blandly he acts. It falls to the other actors (and CG animation) to fill in the personality of the film. The film moves along well into the last half where is loses it's pacing and gets boring.

Hard to recommend to anyone but Eiji Wentz fans and those familiar with the Kitaro manga.

Woman in the Dunes (1964)

An amateur entomologist searching for insects by the sea is trapped by local villagers into living with a mysterious woman who spends almost all her time preventing her home from being swallowed up by advancing sand dunes. The woman and the trapped man begin a strange and erotic relationship that stretches over years, as the man's hope for escape dims.

Comment :

I'd wanted to see this movie for years, and finally got around to it, on DVD. What a treat! I was glad to discover that the erotic element, though important, is not the predominant draw here; typically, some references to the film make it sound as though it were some forbidden erotic romp, or full of perverse sexuality. Instead I found myself wrapped up in a creepy suspense-thriller sci-fi-fantasy carried off with wit, style, and extraordinarily interesting photography (including one scene that, at least on my set, was completely black for a couple of minutes).

I voted "nine" for this wonderful film, in part because it left me with a lot to think about, in part just for how well it was made. The music by Toru Takemitsu is absolutely perfect for the task, too.

This is just about my favorite kind of film: one that raises important questions about human life, but not at the expense of entertainment. It's as close as I'll probably ever come to having my cake and eating it, too.
