Easily one of the best movies I have ever seen.

I am disappointed and yet not surprised at the low score given to this movie. It's not a typical action flick, as the trailer may lead many to believe. It is about so many things and the weak point is that it takes up so much, it is slightly difficult to follow.

I can't even express all the themes and things that flow through this movie. It takes up questions such as: Why do we fight wars? What is ethical? What would you do for love? What does it mean to be a father, a son, lovers, a citizen of a nation, a national leader, human, alive? Visually the movie is just breathtaking. It's gorgeous. Kiriya is not afraid to do what he feels does justice to the scene. He was the one behind the camera, not a common place for the director, to get the shot exactly the way he wanted it. Quite scenes are thoughtful and even the fight scenes are purely intense. Fantastic.

The movie is based on a 70s anime which is quite different. But it is interesting to note the places where the movie pays homage to the original anime.

The English subtitles are quite good and quite accurate. There are a few parts that I would have translated it differently, but over all, the integrity of the film is totally intact.

I highly recommend this film for true lovers of sci-fi who are looking something that is more than mindless battle scenes.

A self-remake of multi-award winning 1982 film by director Oobayashi Nobuhiko, "Tenkousei" is about two junior high student switching body.

Comments :

With the comedy genre offering so little in the way of entertainment lately, it is refreshing to see a film that re-afirms that comedy can be funny without insulting one's intelligence. TALK, TALK, TALK is such a film, offering strong performances, good characterisations, and witty dialogue, making for good-hearted viewing that doesn't overly manipulate or simplify.

Director Hideyuki Hirayama, who has helmed a variety of films from the enjoyable remake SAMURAI Resurrection, the excellent TURN, to the flat and disappointing LADY JOKER, puts character and dialogue front and centre, something a lot of modern film-makers fail to do nowadays.

Taichi Kokubun is fine as the rakugoka-in-training, Karina is wonderful as the sour-faced Satsuki, Yataka Matsushige is perfectly awkward as ex-baseball pinch hitter Yugawara, and Yuuki Morinaga is terrificly natural as the young Murabayashi.

With a story that could have been routine and predictable, TALK, TALK, TALK proves to be anything but, showing that you can have a good time without sacrificing quality.

"Do you believe in ghosts?”Armed with a newly invented material called the Menger Sponge, a team of scientists led by Hashimoto (Yousuke Eguchi) captures the energy of a ghost child. Reluctant at first, Ye himself haunted by guilt, struggling from within on how to let his own dying mother go, accepts the assignment, perhaps, to seek salvation from what the ghost child may reveal about life, and life after death. Hashimoto and his team set the ghost child loose for Ye to follow. With his eyes coated with menger sponge spray, Ye is able to see the ghost. In a close encounter with the ghost killing a drunken man, Ye sees a single strand of silk connected from the ghost to a mysterious power…Tracking the strand of silk, Ye learns the horrifying truth of the child’s death. Believing that hatred is the manifestation of longevity after death, Hashimoto begins to plan his own immortality in the afterlife.Fearing that the ghost child is dangerous, the team decides to isolate the ghost but in doing so they unknowingly unleashed the mysterious source on the other end of the silk strand, a much more powerful and ferocious energy.

Comment :
"Guisi" is an original and dramatic ghost story with characters well developed and great special effects. However, the confused screenplay is weird and flawed in some moments, with an absolute lack of explanation for many situations. For example, how Hashimoto walks in the ceiling of the director's bedroom? Why the ghosts kill when the person looks in their eyes? Why the mother dies exactly when Tung reaches her room? There are many other situations without a satisfactory explanation, but it is worthwhile watching this film. My vote is seven.

There are breakpoints in the history, the result of a single event may change the whole course... In 1909, an assassination attempt to a Japanese governor fails - the assassin was shot by a soldier. Now, in 2009, Korea is just another state of the Japan Empire and Seoul has become a major city. A Korean resistance group called Hureisenjin is formed to fight for liberty and independence. Two cops, a Japan and a Korean (who denied his heritage) are investigating the actions of this "terrorist" group. And their work lead them to an artifact of the ancient Korean religion of "Sun and Moon".

Comment :
This movie has a semi interesting plot. Not very new or original, neither very bad or too obvious. As usual when it comes to South Korean popular movie industry the craftsmanship is next to flawless. The lighting and the scenery are beautiful, the soundtrack is very sentimental and bordering to über-cheese but that shouldn't be a surprise to anyone with the slightest experience in Asian movies. The acting is also good though the English dub doesn't seem to even try to do any lip sync and brings down the overall impression. The special effects are functional but not really that spectacular. Also, the action scenes have way to much slow motion for my taste. Though, I guess this is made in order to boost the sense of patriotism. And, this is where I have my main criticism.

It contains about all components of the propaganda the nationalistic parts of South Korean society likes to flatter itself with. Embarrassingly obvious, even more than usual. North and South Korea are united because they really are brothers. No Korean would harm another Korean. Japan is an enemy, has always been and will always be. Japanese people are not to be trusted, not even those you consider close friends. The Korean on the other hand are brave and self sacrificing with a pure heart. The key to the entire plot comes from the superior ancient culture and system of worship from the Korean peninsula. There are so many subtle details that are being pushed in that mean really a lot if you have an understanding of Korean culture, like the Korean main character has become so Japanese he doesn't even eat Kimchi (!)....

Feng Xiaoning’s Super Typhoon, which somehow ended up in the competition section of this year’s TIFF, is billed as “the first super disaster movie of China.” It’s certainly the first disaster movie I’ve seen in which nobody actually dies: a hymn to the virtues of good planning and upright city officials.

Chief among the heroes is Wu Gang’s mayor, a superhuman figure who repeatedly saves the day with little to fuel him but civic duty and cup noodles. First seen apprehending a pickpocket in the local market, he later gets to make life-or-death judgment calls and take on a shark with a big stick. Guided by the sage advice of his former elementary school teacher, now a meteorologist (Song Xiaoying), he evacuates the city before the titular storm hits, thus leaving his command center to focus their attentions on helping a pregnant woman deliver her child safely. Yeah, it’s that kind of film.

There’s been a lot said in the Chinese press about Super Typhoon‘s special effects, and for the most part they’re impressive, especially by domestic standards. Yet it’s hard to ignore the fact that the storm is apparently buffeting the same four or five cars around the city, one of a number of production glitches that dilutes the overall impact.

None of this stopped Super Typhoon raking in 10 million yuan at the Chinese box office during its first three days on release, of course, but it’s hard to imagine the film finding much of an audience overseas - well, except on the strength of its undeniable kitsch value.
