Asian Thieves Land

Comment :

Following the mainstream theme of Korean movies at the moment, Sonimeun Wangida (The Customer is Always Right), plays on revenge and a slightly less than mediocre love story. Also the movie fails when trying to portray the subtle mood... the same mood for which the Korean cinema has become infamous lately. So what gives - why a just below average 5/10? Well the saying - "The Customer is Always Right" - comes with a twist, and the plot carrying it all the way through does it without a glitch. It is th th th... thoroughly thought through. And Ji-ru Sung playing Ahn Chang-jin does his part more than well. The story only having a few characters makes it very easy to follow and impossible not to understand. It could have used a few more characters to pull of a more complicated twist at the end... all in all a little less than average 5/10.

Five strangers, each with his own special talents, are recruited by the mysterious 'X'. They do not know why they are brought together, but nonetheless agree to a series of potentially lucrative schemes. A planned bank robbery goes awry when a minor mistake leads to a hostage situation. The robbery is orchestrated by Hwan. When Hwan turns up dead at the designated meeting spot, the remaining men realize something is seriously wrong, and suspicion flares.

Comment :
A couple of men successfully rob a bank, but when they arrive at a abandoned hanger with the loot to meet with their leader they find him shot and burned to death. The shocked bank-robbers then try to think back, to find some clue to how this could have happened. This movie reminded me of The Usual Suspects(1995) and Reservoir Dogs(1992). And although those movies are far superior I really did enjoy this nice crime-thriller. Well directed and written it will keep your attention from begin till end, there are no dull moments. The characters are great and the performance of the entire cast is very good. Just like the characters I still didn't have a clue after the numerous flashbacks there are in this movie. I really had to wait until the final minutes of the movie to see the mystery unraveled, and that's why Puzzle is a very good thriller!

``Beautiful'' may be the last word that comes to mind when one thinks of scary movies. But appalling zombies and grotesque images are very much last season, as the horror genre has had a big makeover. The shocking juxtaposition of beauty with creepiness, rather than pure gore, is luring viewers. In ``The Cut,'' currently in theaters and drawing large audiences despite the tough competition with films such as ``Harry Potter 5,'' a group of medical students begin their anatomy class, and a series of mysterious murders ensues. The idea of dissecting cadavers evokes gore, but the students are presented with a cadaver of a young woman who was once gorgeous. Choi Hye-jung, a former model, plays the role of the mysterious lady. Korea's first cadaver dummy wears a rose tattoo on her breast, retaining a perfect figure beyond death. The film's core chills are derived from haunting images of bloody red rose petals falling from the sky and the juxtaposition of youthful beauty with the dark shadows of death. Likewise, soon to be released ``Muoi: The Legend of a Portrait'' and ``Epitaph'' have attracted much attention for their unnerving yet lovely posters. ``Muoi'' tells the tale of a young novelist who comes across a mystic century-old portrait while searching for inspiration. Set in a luscious Vietnamese background, actresses Jo An and Cha Ye-ryun are ravishing in luxurious silk ``Ao Dai'' or traditional Vietnamese dresses, while the looming shadows of death linger in the air. As for ``Epitaph,'' necrophilia and mournful souls will creep out viewers. A young medical intern's arranged marriage is called off when his wife to-be commits suicide. Meanwhile, he falls in love with the corpse of an attractive woman, who turns out to be his dead fiancee. Twenty years later, the man, now an elite doctor, is haunted by a bizarre series of events. ``Epitaph'' is noted for its classic portrayal of Kyongseong (now Seoul) life in the 1940s, when Japanese cultural influences remained strong. The chilling story set against an attractive setting, rather than a sinister haunted house, creates a uniquely eerie ambiance. Following the release of the film's trailer on the Internet, Netizens were excited by the striking resemblance between the dead young woman and actress Han Ga-in, who is known here as the Korean Olivia Hussey (``Romeo and Juliet,'' 1968). ``Splatter movies (gory, blood-tainted stories) are prevalent in the United States, but do not fare too well in Korea,'' said Yoo Hyeong-jin, a researcher at the Korean Film Council (KOFIC). ``Koreans seem to prefer a more sophisticated style of terror.'' Yoo further explained that the noticeable rise of ``beautiful'' domestic horror movies is a result of producers adopting benchmarking, a process of searching out and studying the best practices that produce superior performances. ``Certain cinematic trends tend to dominate the film scene each season,'' he said. So be prepared to taste horror with a touch of loveliness this summer. ``Muoi'' opens in theaters across the country

In 1971 China, in the lingering grip of the cultural revolution, two university students, Luo and Ma, are sent to a mountain mining village as part of their reeducation duty to purge them of their classical western oriented education. Amid the backbreaking work and stifling ignorance of the community, the two boys find that music, and the presence of the beautiful local young women are the only pleasant things in their miserable life. However, none compare to the young seamstress granddaughter of the local tailor. Stealing a departing student's secret cache of forbidden books of classic western literature such as the works of Honore de Balzac, they set about to woo her and teach her things she had never imagined. In doing so, they start a journey that would profoundly change her perspective on her world and teach the boys about the power of literature and their own ability to change their world in truly revolutionary ways.

An action-thriller centered on a vampire-like woman who eats the skins and hearts of her lovers.

Comment :

Based upon the classic literature of Liao Zai, Painted Skin is an adaptation of one of the stories that dwell on fox spirits. If you're someone expecting either a supernatural spook fest, or an amalgamation of ghosts and kung fu, you might be disappointed to find out that it's actually a romance through and through, with complicated relationships all around that you can weave a complex web of love and lust amongst the players involved.

Chen Kun plays Wang Sheng, a general whose army recently overrun the camp of a group of barbarians. In their battle, he rescues a beautiful girl from the grasp of the enemy, and brings her home out of pity and suggestive lust, given that she looks like Zhou Xun. OK, so Zhou Xun plays Xiao Wei, who unknowing to everyone else, is a fox spirit (touted always as beautiful beings in their human form) with an appetite for human hearts in order to maintain her beauty and youth.

Thus begins a tussle for General Wang's heart by both Xiao Wei and Vicky Zhao's Pei Rong, who is the dutiful and demure wife of Wang Sheng. Pei Rong is indeed wary and beginning to suspect Xiao Wei's supernatural abilities when a spate of killings surface with her arrival, but with no proof, Xiao Wei starts to sow discord between the man and wife in order to try and become the new Mrs Wang. It's quite an interesting attempt through the characters to tell of the varying degrees and types of love, one of possession in Xiao Wei's ruthless means to reach her objective, and one of sacrificing for the love and well being of the other half, as established through Pei Rong's selfless courage.

Dynamo Michelle Khan stars as a loyalist who attempts to keep the King's empire from being overthrown by a revolutionary group. Top fight action.

Comment :

On to the reviewing. I didn't really care for this film, for a few reasons. First, NOT ENOUGH MICHELLE YEOH. What scenes she had were incredible, but there just weren't enough of them. Second, ditto Donnie Yen. He's unbelievable, but only when the filmmakers let him do something. There is a bit of a love story, where he loves Michelle and she loves the guy I thought was her brother but wasn't. Tony Leung Chiu Wai (isn't there another guy with the same name?) and Joey Wang were the only people that loved each other. They didn't go around pining after everyone else. Confused? That's a minor problem with this, but who cares about the story when people are flying through the air, decapitating evil kung fu masters using only a volleyball? (Shaolin Volleyball, anyone?)

This film is essentially a bunch of fight scenes strung together. Most films in this genre are, and the fights in this one are way better than average. I don't suppose it's a film you'd want to make your children watch, as blood does gush liberally throughout most of the movie. Oh, and let's not forget the bad guy who continues to fight AFTER HIS HEAD HAS BEEN RIPPED OFF--now that's determination. You begin to get exasperated, wondering what it will take to just kill the man. Or at least hurt him. (I get the same exasperated feeling when video games hit you with constantly respawning bad guys. How are you supposed to win when your opponents refuse to expire?!?) I don't mind headless villains and blood gushing, especially when it's this attractive. Gore isn't usually eye candy, but Hong Kong just has a knack for this kind of thing. Donnie Yen does some great sword fighting with only one arm, but then he does great fighting all the time. (See "Dragon Inn" if you don't believe me.) I also happen to think that he's handsome, so maybe I'm prejudiced.

A thriller centered on an urban legend about a song that fatally affects its listeners.

Comment :

At first impression, Masato Harada's "SUICIDE SONG" (2007, DENSEN UTA) may have strong similarities to Sion Sono's "Suicide Club". This film is written by Yasushi Akimoto who also wrote the Japanese original "One Missed Call" and the J-pop group AKB48 takes center stage in this film with a horror-subplot to spice things up. While the cult hit "Suicide Club" had strong elements such as gore, a cryptic plot and a powerful message about pop culture, this film follows the usual Japanese horror trappings such as a sad backstory, a "curse" that needed exploration and the usual themes of existentialism.

When a young girl named Kana (Atsuko Maeda) mysteriously commits suicide after singing a song, her school mates led by Anzu (Yuko Oshima) and a group of magazine reporters led by Riku (Ryuhei Matsuda) with Kana's childhood friend, Shuri (Sayaka Akimoto) become obsessed in solving the mystery behind Kana's death. A mysterious urban legend about a supposed song seems to encourage suicide. The group decides to sing the song to test the truth about the urban legend. When Kiriko (beauteous Haruna Kojima) and Taechi (Yusuke Iseya) commit suicide, Riku decides to hide the remaining survivors in his hometown.

The film does feel like a rehash of Sono's "Suicide Club" but rather than involving a cryptic storyline, "Suicide Song" is quite easy to follow. The film's storyline is very simple. The issues with this film isn't so much as how simple it is, but the film's script rather feels like it is trying too hard to be more and pitches too many ideas that the film itself feels rather underdeveloped. As a result the film's pace suffers quite a bit and ends up with a "sleepy" feel that loses all credible horror aspects. "Suicide Song" has the usual messages on existentialism, a subtle commentary about the media, along with the strong commentary about suicide.

Comment :

Hong Kong haven't really been good at making horror movies, but this one's an Ok attempt. A sixth sense-type storyline is given a Chinese twist, with a few unnerving scenes as a result. Good production values. I'd recommend it to HK and horror buffs. Good but inessential. The sequel; Horoscope II - the woman from hell is messier, less scary, and not very good at all.

A teenage girl adopts a homeless puppy and names it "Socks". They take care of each others since then, until one day when she is thinking Socks to be smaller than she thought it used be...

Comment :

The 10 promises referred to here isn't exactly 10 of the best that one would actually commit to the pet, but rather, a pact of understanding from both parties that build on trust. And that turns out to be key to the story, as it extends not only between animals and man, but across relationships that both parties will forge with others and fellow species as well. In fact, some of these serve as universal reminders, and I suppose young kids who are brought to see this G-rated film, will probably come to understand that it takes a lot of responsibility to take care of a pet, especially when one's priorities in life tend to change as one grows up within the average lifespan of, in this case, a dog.

Told over 10 years, the film stars Mayuko Fukuda and Lena Tanaka as the character of Akari, a young girl who seem to suffer from setback after setback ranging from family to relationship issues, despite her sunshine cheery demeanour. And the best parts in the movie pertain to the carefully crafted story about family, about being there for your loved ones, and making precious moments count. And with the 10 promises, we will journey with Akari to see if she can commit to the pact successfully, or not.
